Most of the media often paints all businesses with a single stroke, but in our experience businesses are each unique and so many of them are focused on making the world a better place. We’ve highlighted a few such gems below.
Wendy Lewis | Acne and Mental Health Advocate
I started The Acne Effect to raise awareness and educate the public about the impact that acne has on mental health. It is estimated that about 90% of the world population is affected by acne at some point in their lifetime. Acne is a chronic skin condition that impacts an individual’s life much deeper than what appears on the skin’s surface; it is often life-altering. Statistically, individuals with acne have been found to suffer anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation, and overall a lesser quality of life at a much higher rate than individuals without acne. It is common for people with acne to neglect their mental health while focusing solely on clearing up their skin, believing their issues will go away if they can achieve clear skin again. This is often so far from the truth. Read more>>

Dr. Jane Tornatore | Therapist, Teacher, and Author
When I was in my early 20’s my sister dragged our family to a family therapist. The therapist started the session saying her job is to put herself out of business. Since I was working on Madison Ave in New York City at the time, this made NO sense. The therapist went on the explain that she helped families become healthy. The kids, if they have children, would create healthier families. If those kids had children, they would be healthier, and on and on, until healthy families spread around the world and she would be out of a job. That day I decided to quit my advertising job and go to school to become a family therapist. There are so many things we cannot control in the world, but we can choose how we live and act. Our choices and influences on the world matter. I sometimes look at everything going on in our world and I feel helpless. Then I remember that the healthier I am, the better my relationships and influence in the world will be. Read more>>
Elizabeth Whitelaw | Co-Founder & CEO
We created Lookit as a response to the Covid-19 crisis. Not only did women begin trying on new makeup and skincare at home more than ever, but sadly, many of my own personal friends in the artist industry lost business when the pandemic began in 2020. I wanted to create a space where women could easily try new makeup looks at home, and where artists could sell their looks online and grow their business in a new channel — even if their clients can’t visit them in the studio. We want to make it easier for women to find looks and products that matter to them most. In yesterday’s world, she would need to scour the internet and research brands on her own to find products that achieve her beauty and social goals. Lookit enables her to narrow down her desired look based off any type of preference or concern. For example, she may need a date-night look that only uses organic, sustainably-sourced products with anti-aging ingredients. We’ll have a look for that. Read more>>
Veronica Dominguez | “The Plant Lady” Owner of S & V Plant Love
Our company S & V Plant Love has become a great source for people dealing with depression during the pandemic. We have seen more and more people going thru tougher times during this pandemic. Being isolated for longer periods of time during the pandemic has led a lot of people to indoor plant and trees. Taking care of a plant or tree can show a person how to have empathy as they care for them. Just seeing the growth of a new leaf unfurling can also be so gratifying. I myself have dealt with anxiety from the social distancing we have had to do. With each plant or tree we sell we can see each new plant/tree owner come out of their depression and feelings of anxiety. Plants and Trees offer the benefits of purifying your homes air as well so not only are they beautifying the home but adding value to good clean air. Read more>>
