We had the good fortune of connecting with Jake Mowrer and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jake, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I’ve always loved working with people to help them solve problems through empathy, technology, and process improvement. This is at the center of every role I’ve taken during my 26-year IT career. One day while at work, a colleague reported to me that one of the computers that he and I use to run demos for potential customers was running slowly. We found that a hacker had taken control of the server and was using it to mine for crypto currency. Crypto currency, such as Bitcoin, is a popular way that hackers can make money. The more computers they have mining, the more crypto currency they can earn. We traced the hacker back to the computer he was using to send instructions to our computer and found that our computer was not the only one the hacker had infiltrated. In fact, several thousand computers around the world were under the hacker’s control, mining for crypto currency. It was that moment when it dawned on me that these were computers belonging to kids, parents, grandparents, small businesses, and other human beings that probably had no idea this hacker had complete control of their system. Using the computer and the electricity that they pay for, to make money for themselves. Stealing, with little regard to who they were stealing from. Most of the victims probably noticed their computer was slow but didn’t know how to fix it. Or worse, they took their computer and paid even more money to have it fixed. My colleague and I were obviously not pleased with this hacker’s actions and felt compelled to set things right. So, we wiped out the hacker’s computer where he stored his victim list and instructions. We also left a nice note in their native language, recommending they find their own servers to mine with. The next day I reflected on what happened and realized I maybe had something to offer consumers and small business to help them defend against these attacks. As a kid, I always wanted to be Batman. Defending people who were prayed on by criminals. But I wasn’t extremely wealthy nor had any athletic talent. But maybe this was my chance to use my other skills to help defend people against hackers. This was the moment that the business, IronSpire Security, was born.

What should our readers know about your business?
IronSpire Security’s goal is to ensure people and their devices (computers, phones, smart appliances, cameras, etc) are well defended against hackers, and kids are kept away from online content their parents feel is not appropriate for them to experience at this stage in their lives (or ever). We install a device in your home or business that we fully manage and monitor and alert you if we see suspicious activity.

The challenge in our business today is that people are unaware of why they would need what we offer. People are amazed when I tell them that a study done by Norton in 2021 showed that more than half of consumers have experienced some type of cybercrime related incident(1). Getting this word out has been a challenge for us, especially when people are bombarded with product and service marketing via their mobile devices. Even these advertisements online are being weaponized by hackers, it’s called malvertising(2). Word of mouth has been our best method thus far but we continue to look for ways to reach more people to raise awareness of online risks.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love BBQ so being new to Midlothian, finding a BBQ restaurant was on our must do list. My sister pointed us to “a BBQ place in the Shell gas station” as being one place to go. When I heard this, I was a bit skeptical. A BBQ place, in a Shell station? My wife and I gave it a shot and now we are regulars at Texas Best Smokehouse(1). Their BBQ is awesome.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My parents taught me that hard work pays off and to keep trying and learn from every failure. I believe this is the foundation that has carried me through my adult life and something I teach my kids. I also appreciate the understanding and forgiveness from my wife and sons during the times when I’m in front of a computer when they would rather I spend time with them (probably fixing a TV or computer). I am grateful for the many blessings God has given my family and me.
