We had the good fortune of connecting with Bailey Austin Bird and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Bailey, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I’ve always been very entrepreneurial and knew that starting my own business would be part of my path. When the opportunity arose to do my own project I jumped on the opportunity and went full steam ahead. I’m lucky to be raised by parents who always reinforced independence and instilled self confidence that I would succeed with enough hard work.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I love to be busy and have a ton of work on my plate. The deadline inspires so much creativity. The fast paced work life is hard to maintain with a family and small children. I have been working diligently on saying “no” which is hard to turn down new and exciting work, but it is giving me more space to more fully develop each project.

Branding is a slippery slope to feeling boxed into a specific style. I have tried to brand myself as someone who helps the client identify their personal brand instead of projecting my taste on them. I like honing each clients style to better reflect them and shine in the best light possible. I enjoy different styles and personalities because it makes each project so unique.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
A week long trip in Tulsa…. Best places for coffee and breakfast – Queenies, Chimera and Shades of Brown for a matcha

Day trips – I love the outdoors and these are my favorites spots to go on the weekend. The Gathering Place with or without kids is beautiful and a place of discovery. The Botanic Gardens are a true treasure in the beautiful hilly landscape. Turkey Mountain is great spot for a hike. The Philbrook is always wonderful, the spring and summer activities are the best with people enjoying every aspect of the museum.

Dinner – Oren (my favorite!) The food at Oren is top notch. Cafe Ole is a great casual spot next to the fireplace in the winter with the best margaritas. Basque is also a favorite. We like to sit at the bar and share everything. The menu changes frequently and everything is a little adventurous and delicious.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My parents instilled the virtues of hard work, perseverance and dedication. They encouraged us (my 3 sisters) to follow our passions which has led to a very rewarding work life. My dad owned his own company which planted a seed early on that I would want to create my own path someday.

Steven Turner was a local architect who designed my parents home and he was a close family friend. He spent a lot of time at our house and helped encourage my interest in architecture. He drew blue prints for my 4th grade toothpick bridge with me and helped me build the (winning) project.

I worked for Pelli Clarke Pelli in the Connecticut and New York offices which showed me how to create endless design solutions to finding the perfect fit (budget and design) for each project.
