Meet Toluwalase Olawale | Lead Stylist & Creative Director of Kuuks & Co.

We had the good fortune of connecting with Toluwalase Olawale and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Toluwalase, we’d love to hear what makes you happy.
One thing that makes me happy is knowing that I played a role in making a woman feel her most beautiful. Fashion is an avenue for expression, and for many women, hair is an extension of this self-expression. Whether it’s a wig for a costume party or a sleek look for the office or graduation, I’m always so proud to see my clients holding their heads high as they sport their new look. It’s also super rewarding to see how their faces light up when they first receive their wigs, it makes all the hours of work worth it.
What should our readers know about your business?
Kuuks & Co. is the hub for all things beauty, elegance and glamour. From the corporate lady to the glamorous gran, there’s something for every woman at Kuuks & Co. We specialize in custom wigs, hair extensions and unique handmade beauty accessories. I jokingly say that I was ‘pushed’ into starting my business, although I’ve always had an inclination to entrepreneurship. I made my first wig after my mom encouraged me to try doing so as I was going to be away from Texas for 6 months, and she always the one who did my hair. Like any other person looking to learn a new skill, I enrolled in YouTube university and made my first wig! My mom loved my wig and had me make one for her. While I was away, she received many compliments and was even stopped at the local grocery store by a lady that loved her hair. She gave the lady my information, and the rest is history!
Although it’s been a beautiful one, the journey has definitely not been easy, I’ve struggled with self-doubt as a self-taught stylist, difficulty balancing being a full-time law student, legal intern and entrepreneur, shipping delays, factory errors. and being broke (no one ever prepares you for how much entrepreneurship drains your money initially). However, my parents have guided me through these hurdles; my dad is an accountant and he guides me with money management, and my mom is a wealth of ideas, so I’m never stuck for long.
One thing that sets my business apart is the attention to detail: every single aspect of the Kuuks & Co. experience is tailored to be smooth, painless, and pleasurable. I personally designed the logo, branding, packaging and website to ensure that the brand identity (accessible luxury) is ubiquitous. Another thing that sets Kuuks & Co. apart is the passion: I’ve been making headbands since I was in high school. I’d gather scraps of Ankara fabric from my grandma’s tailor shop and wrap headbands in different patterns and large bows (although, in hindsight, some of the combinations clashed). I’ve always loved expressing my personal style through my hair and accessories and I love the versatility that accessories and a different hairstyle can add to an outfit. I’m inspired by the elegant women in my family, and this is evident in the DNA of Kuuks & Co. The brand name even comes from my Ghanaian name : Ekua/Kuukua. It’s genuinely my pleasure to craft my clients’ custom wigs and crown them with unique, lightweight, handmade headbands (minus the headache of course!). I’m all about effortless glamour and I’ve crafted the Kuuks & Co. experience to reflect that.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take them Uptown! Like every other twenty-something year old, I love brunch! My favorite spots in Knox/Henderson are Smithy and Taverna/Toulouse. I’m a sucker for museums/galleries, so I’d take them to the Dallas Museum of Art, Nasher Sculpture Center and the unique Mercado369 in the Bishop Arts District. I’m a Collin County girl, so I’d also take them to Legacy West in Plano to shop and eat. Historic Downtown McKinney also has a great collection of unique, family owned stores.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would love to dedicate this shoutout to my family! My mom was the one who pushed me out of my comfort zone and encouraged me to launch my business, my dad was my first investor and my siblings help me with content creation and fulfilling orders. I come from a big and supportive family who never let me get too discouraged, I really could not have achieved all that I have without their help, love and support. I’m also eternally grateful to my extended family and network of girlfriends for being some of my first customers (even when I wasn’t very good!). Their words of encouragement mean the world to me and keep me going whenever I feel discouraged. Above all, I recognize that everything I’m able to do is by the grace of God, and I can never downplay the importance of my Christian faith to my business.
