We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexa Martinez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alexa, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My thought process really started with seeing a need that wasn’t being fully met. There was plenty of information about helping babies sleep, but not enough support for the mom who was exhausted, overwhelmed, and trying to figure it all out.
I wanted to create something that cared for both. I knew I could use my experience, education, and certifications to give families practical sleep support, while also creating a space where moms felt heard and supported instead of judged. That’s really how Mama Matters Too began. I wanted moms to know that their baby’s sleep matters, but their well-being matters too.

What should our readers know about your business?
Mama Matters Too is a baby and toddler sleep consulting business built around a simple belief: your baby’s sleep matters, but so does the mom behind the baby.

I support families with babies and toddlers, especially those who feel exhausted, overwhelmed, or unsure of how to make changes without ignoring their instincts. My approach is evidence-based, compassionate, and faith-led. I don’t believe families should have to choose between leaving their baby to cry alone or continuing with sleep habits that are no longer sustainable. I help parents create a clear, responsive plan that includes loving boundaries, realistic expectations, and support for the entire family.

What sets Mama Matters Too apart is that I don’t only look at wake windows, naps, and bedtime routines. Those things matter, but I also pay attention to the mom’s mental and emotional well-being. I have a master’s degree in nutrition, along with certifications in sleep consulting and postpartum doula support, but some of my most valuable understanding has come through my own experiences with motherhood, exhaustion, anxiety, and hard seasons.

Getting to where I am today has definitely not been easy or linear. I’ve had to learn how to build a business while raising a child, serving families, and navigating major personal challenges. In 2024, at the age of 30, I was diagnosed with colorectal cancer. I went through several surgeries, serious complications including sepsis and a blood clot, a temporary ileostomy, and another surgery to reverse it. My business had to slow down while I focused on surviving and healing.

Coming back after cancer changed me and changed the way I approach my work. It gave me an even deeper understanding of what it feels like to lose yourself in a difficult season and slowly begin finding your way back. It also reminded me that success isn’t always about growing faster. Sometimes success looks like continuing, rebuilding, and allowing your purpose to become clearer through what you’ve lived.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that I don’t have to copy what everyone else is doing. The more I’ve leaned into my own voice and the heart behind Mama Matters Too, the more connected I’ve felt to the business I’m building. I’ve also learned that moms don’t need more judgment or vague advice. They need honest information, practical steps, and someone who can support them with both compassion and confidence.

I’m especially proud of the trust families place in me during such a vulnerable season. I’m also proud of my podcast and the community I’m continuing to build around sleep, faith, mental health, motherhood, and the reminder that moms are people who deserve care too.

What I want people to know about Mama Matters Too is that we care for the whole family. Helping a baby sleep is important, but this work is also about helping a mom feel more rested, confident, and capable of showing up for her life again. You don’t have to abandon your baby to make a change, and you don’t have to abandon yourself either.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I live in Frisco, so I’d want to give them the full North Texas experience, with plenty of good food (and coffee!) built into the week.

Our first stop would absolutely be Musashi Sushi. It’s our favorite restaurant, and we go often enough that they literally know our names. The food is amazing, but it also feels like our neighborhood spot, so taking someone there would be a must. Then coffee at La La Land- my fave, it’s always good!

One day would be dedicated to Historic Downtown McKinney farmers market, which happens every Saturday morning. I love their local businesses and always stock up on raw milk, pasture raised eggs, and organic meats, fruits and veggies. I’d spend another day showing them around The Star in Frisco, walking through the shops, and grabbing dinner or drinks nearby.

Since we’d have a full week, I’d plan at least one Dallas day to visit the Dallas Arboretum. We can spend all day there, especially if the weather is nice!

The final day would be much more relaxed. We’d sleep in, get brunch at Egg Posh, spend time by the pool if the weather allowed, and obviously more coffee. For me, the best week wouldn’t only be about fitting in every attraction. It would be a mix of great food, local favorites, a few classic Texas experiences, and plenty of time to actually sit, talk, and enjoy being together.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would absolutely give a shoutout to my husband Ryan, who has been my number one fan for 14 years, and has always believed in me and my mission, even when there was nothing to show for it yet. Starting and growing a business takes a lot of time, energy, and faith, and I wouldn’t have been able to do it without their encouragement and support. He took that leap of faith with me!

I also have to recognize the moms and families who have trusted me during some of their most exhausting and vulnerable seasons. They’re the reason I continue doing this work. Every family I’ve supported has helped shape Mama Matters Too and reminded me why this mission matters so much. My business may have started with an idea, but it has grown because of the people who believed in it, trusted me, and continued cheering me on.
