We had the good fortune of connecting with Rickey “Slikk Muzik” Offord and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rickey “Slikk Muzik”, how do you think about risk?
I feel that taking risks is what changed my life/career for the better. It allowed me to become an entrepreneur business owner, 2 time Grammy Award wining multi platinum music producer. 1st quarter of 2013 I made a decision to walk away from my corporate America job and moved from my hometown Dallas to Los Angeles, California to pursue my music career full time. I had been producing music since I was a kid but hadn’t reached that level of opportunity that I had been working so hard towards. I made the decision to take this risk after months of much strategizing, preparation and planning. No matter how much I planned and prepared, it was still risky to leave my “9 to 5” with benefits to pursue my dreams. But now, I’m extremely grateful that I did! I wouldn’t sit here and paint a fairy tale picture and say the risks I took for my career brought me all success. That’s not true. I took plenty of losses before I started seeing the wins, but I have no regrets on the decisions I made. They paid off for me after much persistence and determination. But the risks I took played a major part of who I am today.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve won 2 Grammys, 1 Golden globe award, 1 billboard award, and multiple platinum plaques from producing music. My family is from a little country town with population under 20,000 people called Crandall, Texas right outside of Dallas. For me to put my family’s name on and legacy on the map world wide through my music means everything to me. I grew up in both Crandall and Dallas. Where I come from it’s not an everyday thing to see someone “make it” in the mainstream music industry. Not in a negative way, but it’s just not something common. It definitely wasn’t easy and the challenges never stop. I never gave up, I stayed consistent, persistent, resilient and determined. I wouldn’t take NO for an answer even if I took a loss. It motivated me to go harder and turn the loss into a win. I’ve learned that no matter how many times you fail, your failures push you into your purpose. It’s all a part of your future success. I appreciate my success even the more due to my failures. It kept me humbled and level headed. I want the world to know that my story and brand represents the success story of redemption. I was always an underdog which is why I stayed motivated. But with me taking the risk and leaving my job to move to Los Angeles in 2013 by myself and pursue my music career full time, then after gaining some success, 2016 I unexpectedly lost everything including my very life itself while in a 33 day coma. I was at my absolute lowest. But after miraculously recovering from that, God blessed me to gain everything I lost back seem like in double. 2 years later I won my Grammys and Golden globe and now the story of my redemption is continuing to unfold. I’m forever grateful even if I never make another record. The moral of my story is to never give up, if you give you up then you will forfeit your purpose and legacy. Believe. Have faith. You have to want it. You have to put in the work but have patience and endurance at the same time. Nipsey hussle said it best, it’s not a sprint it’s a marathon.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I dedicate this shoutout first to God. I’m only here because of him. Also to my core (My family, my wife Daria, our kids, my mom Diann, my dad Rickey Sr. and my sister Chelsea. They have been my foundation and rock when I need them the most. My #1 fans and support system. I also want to salute my mentors Sherwin Charles (Iroc) and Montell Jordan both for being very instrumental in my life/career and keeping it 100 with me at all times. And to my brother from another mother Jeremy “J-Mu” Hairston for being a solid friend and always pushing me to be better. I want to thank all of my Offord and Morgan family and real friends that have ever encouraged, supported, loved, appreciated, inspired me throughout my career and life journey. Way too many to name but you all are really appreciated. -Slikk Muzik
