We had the good fortune of connecting with Rachel Lumbreras and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rachel, is there something you believe many others might not?
When I first told people I was starting a photography business a lot of people told us to make sure and nail down our “look” because that would help us get the most clients. I don’t fully disagree with this advice, but I do think it’s dangerous territory to fit unique clients into the same 2 presets. At Lighthouse Creative we pride ourselves on valuing the individual.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I found photography through a heartbreaking time in my life. My husband bought me a camera when he started to notice I needed a new way to express myself creatively. If I’m being honest, trying new things really scares me. If I’m not great, I don’t want anything to do with it. Starting photography was (and still is) a hugely humbling process. Not to mention starting a business with your husband! Through the process of starting our business, I’ve learned an important lesson: Create more and compare less. In this social media age, it is easy to get caught up looking at everyone else! It’s easy to forget who YOU are and what YOU have to offer! Lighthouse Creative was born out of a place in my life when I didn’t know if I would ever have something I loved to do again. On the other side of that difficult season, I am so happy that I am choosing to focus on creating and remaining true to myself.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
There is SO much to do in DFW. I love all things creative: Live music, unique restaurants…Dallas has our heart! We love the diversity of food at Trinity Groves or a staycation at the Jule in the heart of the city. There are fun things to do from cooking and painting classes or just sitting out at Kylde Warren Park with the food trucks and our dog!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d love to thank my Valley Creek Church family! – I wouldn’t be anywhere without a strong community to launch from, and fall back on! Also, I’d like to thank Kelly from Blackall Photography for investing in me and holding me to my best!
