We had the good fortune of connecting with Phillip Porter & Dr. Janice Porter and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Phillip & Dr. Janice, do you disagree with some advice that is more or less universally accepted?
The one piece of conventional advice that I disagree with is “don’t hire family”, “don’t work with your family” or “don’t invest with family”. This advice has been universally accepted because families have not been provided with the skills nor been formally taught how to work together as a family unit.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?

Generations Empowerment Enterprises, LLC is a privately held African American family-owned business that was founded in 2008.  We provide families with the education, knowledge, resources, and confidence to build generational wealth.

What sets us apart from other educational family service organizations:
– Our business is comprised of 3 generations that are financially invested by owning shares in the family business and committed to generational success personally and professionally.
– We successfully launched the Global Family Success Institute which has successfully educated individuals, families, and groups throughout the United States on the best practices for building generational wealth.

Most Proud Achievements
– We were selected to present at the National Association of African American Studies & Affiliates Virtual National Conference in 2021 on the topic “10 Best Practices of Successful Families”. This was an international conference and thus we were blessed to share our presentation worldwide.
– We are also excited about becoming Adjunct Professors at West Coast Bible College & Seminary (WCBCS). In addition, WCBCS has approved us to teach our curriculum titled: “Certification in Family Success” and participants who complete the course receive 10 college credits. This course is based on our book & workbook “The Power In A Vision Driven Family: The Journey To A Generational Vision”.

How did we get to where we are today business-wise?
– Step 1: Big Family Business Vision: We have a shared family business vision and mission statement that includes long & short-term goals that have been successfully communicated to three generations.

– Step 2: Preparation – Phillip Porter has an MBA and Dr. Janice Porter has a doctorate in Education. Combined they have over 50 years of teaching, training, and educational leadership experience that includes the public school system, corporate America, and nonprofit sectors. In addition, we have extended family members with very specific skills and experiences that ensure family business success.

– Step 3: Passion & Commitment – We love and believe in educating individuals and families and coaching them on building wealth.

– Step 4: Championship Team Mentality – The best way to explain this is with one of our favorite quotes “Talent win games, but teamwork and intelligence win championships.” – Michael Jordan”

– Step 5: Training – Through family relationship and leadership “Soft Skills Training” we intentionally have learned how to work together as a family to build a business. We then pass these learned skills and experiences down to the next generations.

– Step 6: Great Mentors – We are blessed to have some very successful millionaire mentors.

Was it easy? No, it was not, it is not, and never will be easy. We have overcome many challenges by clearly knowing and understanding our purpose and having outstanding mentors and having a championship team mentality. Some challenges we were able to overcome quickly and some challenges have taken us years to overcome. We stay focused on our short-term goals, long-term vision, the big picture, and the families we serve.

What lessons we’ve learned:
– As owners of a family business, we are stronger together, more knowledgeable together, wiser together, have a larger network together, have more expertise together, and can become wealthier together.  The unique skills the family needs to work together must be learned, mastered, and passed to the next generation.
