We had the good fortune of connecting with Nautica Quintero and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nautica, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
I work a full time job and I’m a full time parent. All of this plus running a business has helped me better understand time management. I work all day and even try to tend to business needs or even questions that come up throughout the day simply because people feel better when you respond quickly, turns into better opportunities. After work, I tend to my family and our household, then immediately jump into business mode until about 10/11pm. Before running a business, I almost had an empty feeling inside, like I was missing something. Creating products, arranging shipments, tracking inventory; this all takes time, yes, but it has definitely opened my eyes to my true potential. Now don’t get me wrong, I will make time for my personal life because working 24/7 burns out the brain. So I’ll put a hold on things at least 1-2 days during the week to better appreciate my business and my life all together.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
We started just like everyone else; an idea that came to us on a late night. I really wanted to apply my true creativity to something worth meaning. It wasn’t easy! We had to figure out where to even get the funds because we just moved and we all know how that is. Really, a good friend of ours offered to invest in my idea and bring it to life! (Thank you Sergio!) I couldn’t contain myself and I just burst into tears! The fact that a good friend had that much hope in me running my own business.. it was astonishing! We then ran with it and started buying inventory starting with self defense keychains: a wristlet, an accessory pocket, a pepper spray, an alarm with an LED flashlight, a bottle opener and some extra flare with a pom pom. Kept it cute and girly!

As time went on we continued adding more to offer such as self defense accessories (stun guns, discreet pocket knives, pepper sprays, etc.) customizable accessories, even cute little croc charms (Jibbitz).

Our main goal to start SecureYourselfSis was to give women or really anyone a sense of security with these dangerous times we’ve run into via media. I’ve heard so many stories about having stalkers, being harassed, or just being fearful of being alone. We wanted everyone to feel as comfortable as they could with something as simple as carrying a bottle of pepper spray.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
That’s a tough one! Being in DFW there’s so much you could do, but you can’t get to everything! For sure I’d take them down to Klyde Warren park because the food trucks never fail, the atmosphere is amazing. I would take them down to the JFK assassination museum, a piece of U.S. history you can see with your own eyes. The reunion tower for sure simply because it’s Dallas’ unique building that separates the Dallas skyline from any other. Now we want to take a stroll on a nice weather day, I’d take them down to Bishop Arts. There’s so many small businesses that you can visit and have their own tastes to each spot. From eateries, artesanal shops, flower shops.. there’s so much to offer!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
When I started SecureYourselfSis I had so many questions where to start, best supply stores, even the best website builder. Sunshine Customs aka Melissa, was very attentive and helped me so much when I first started and tried her hardest to help me figure out situations I felt stuck in.

The best person I would love to give a shout-out to would be my partner, Miguel. He helped me, pushed me, sacrificed with me, stood in the cold/heat with me. I couldn’t have picked a better business partner and life partner to motivate me to continue pushing. I don’t think I could ever thank him enough.
