We had the good fortune of connecting with Michael Bell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Michael, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I’ve always loved to garden and grow veggies! While on YouTube one day I came across a guy who made a good full time living growing salad mix and a few other veggies in his neighbors backyard. As I watched all his videos the thought of doing something like this grew in my mind. I did a little research in the local Dallas area and realized there was a huge demand for fresh local organic vegetables. So putting all these things together basically got the ball rolling.
What should our readers know about your business?
Most people think of tractors and big machines when they hear the word farming. My farm is completely different, I use no mechanical devices, zero gasoline, and only a tiny bit of electricity to run my water pump! I also believe my little farm is different from others because I use NO chemicals, not even the ones that are approved for organic certification. Using no chemicals does make it tough but it also forces me to learn ways to grow crops smarter and more naturally which gives them a much better taste and maximum nutrient density that you can’t find in a grocery store!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
That’s a great question!! I have a close friend from New Jersey who comes to Dallas a lot! We always eat at whataburger a few times. We always make it out to Cowboys Red River for a few beers and a good time!! If he is in the mood for pizza we go to Flatbreads off of Greenville Ave. We both love to workout so we will a few workouts in at Destination Dallas off of 75. There’s so much to do here we never run out of new things to do!!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I never would’ve discovered this type of farming or the techniques to make my farm possible without Curtis stone and his hours of content teaching and showing people how to do it! I also wouldn’t be where I am out the help of the head grower from Big Tex Urban Farms Drew Dempler, his experience and over all help have been invaluable. One more thanks has to go to my close friends Derek Gammon and Charlie Long for all their help with the stuff I need an extra set of hands with! Finally and most of all, my wife for letting me follow my passion and do what I love!!!
