We had the good fortune of connecting with Maddie Edgerton and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Maddie, as a parent, what have you done for you children that you feel has had the most significant impact?
I had to really think about this question, because I feel like there is more than one answer to it. If you’re a parent, you know how complex the parenting relationship is with your child and how every little thing you do impacts them. After reflecting on this question though, I think one of the most important things I’ve done as a parent is to allow my child to feel his feelings as much as possible. Wether my son is crying about not getting the “Bullseye” stickers at the Target checkout for whatever reason or angry because his lunch spilled on the floor, I do my absolute best to allow my son to feel whatever comes up for him, in a safe space. I’m not perfect at this–no one ever is–but if I can remember that his experience is simply overwhelming him in that moment (instead of having the perspective that it’s “negative”, “unwanted” or “bad” behavior) then my son is able to move through emotions and feelings more quickly and resolve them within himself. It’s not easy work mind you! It’s conscious parenting every day, trial and error, and ultimately connecting with your child. However, the benefits of this are incredible, in my opinion, and I’ve witnessed as having one of the greatest impacts on my child.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My business, Sweets by Maddie, is a home bakery located in Little Elm, TX. Although I’ve been an avid baker most of the life, I have been offering decorated cookies, among other baked goods for almost 2 years. I think what sets my business apart from others is that my customers rave about the taste of my cookies–whether it’s my signature flavor decorated sugar cookie or my chocolate chip cookies–my customers tell me all the time that they love the way my cookies taste. In addition to their deliciousness, customers rave about the customer service I provide. I have exceedingly high expectations for myself and how I run my business, and I go above and beyond to make sure my customers are happy! Doing so definitely comes with its challenges though. I have to constantly balance my business, being a stay-at-home mom, and wife, which means that sometimes I have to decline orders or take cookie-breaks to ensure I don’t burn out or become overwhelmed. I absolutely love what I do though and I’m so happy to provide beautiful cookies for people that will create lasting memories forever for them.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend were in town, my favorite spots that I would show them would be the Dallas Arboretum, The Star in Frisco, and the local shops in downtown McKinney. We’d also drive through the country because I think that’s one of the beautiful aspects of Texas is the luring wide open fields and the never-ending sky. But, honestly, we’d probably eat most of the time because there’s so many great places to eat in the area. We would visit Detour Doughnuts, Barney’s Brunch House, Tender Smokehouse BBQ, Legacy Hall, Tupelo Honey, Mi Dia, and the Sno Cone lady in Friso – just to name a few spots.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to dedicate my shoutout to all the mothers that I know in my life. Whether it’s both of my grandmothers who inspired me in the kitchen to my own mother who taught me invaluable skills as she showered others with love through her cooking and baking. In addition, I owe my business inspiration to a local mom baker who ignited a spark in me to create my own business called, Sweets by Maddie. Lastly, I cannot forget all the moms, many of whom I call my close friends now, who have supported me in my creative venture all along the way and the new moms that I meet through my business. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for lifting me up in more ways than one.
