We had the good fortune of connecting with Joy & Jessica Phillips and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Joy & Jessica, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
We try different restaurants and travel every now and then, when we do people would ask our opinion about different places around the city or what we thought about this or that location as well as things to do when we would travel. Also, every now and again people would ask Jessica about different recipes or dishes she made. So, Jessica thought maybe it would be cool to start a Youtube channel based on food reviews, new recipes, traveling, and etc. Pretty much giving you a glimpse into our life in general. This led to the channel being titled “It’s a Phillips Thang”, because of course we’re married and our last name is Phillips.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Our channel “It’s a Phillips Thang” is different from other couples that are on Youtube because we don’t follow the normal trends but we still try to be trendsetters and relatable. We do this by being authentic to who we are and inviting you to see our likes and interests through our eyes. We’re proud of having a growing audience that appreciates our content, it’s definitely not easy to try to grow and gain consistent subscribers but we are definitely appreciative of our “Phillips Gang”. Posting content consistently on our TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, and Youtube is a slight struggle but when it’s done we do see the rewards. That’s what keeps us going, it does sound cliche but it’s the truth. We want the world to know that it’s ok to be different from others and be who you are as a persona nd as a couple.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
So if we had a friend doing a week long trip from Sunday to Saturday, it might go something like this: Sunday would be brunch or a late lunch (depending on when they got into town) at Stirr in Addison and have great conversation and drinks. There are different shops that we could visit or could rest up and prepare to head back out that evening to the Ms. Wanda Comedy Show at Club Vegas and definitely get a fish basket from Fish Trapn’ while there. On Monday, that afternoon or evening (we still have work, maybe on some days), we could head back to Addison to play a round of mini golf at Putt Shack and even grab a bite there since they also serve food. Tuesday we would definitely have them check out a movie at B&B Theater in Red Oak, especially since Tuesday is a discount day if you’re a member plus they have an arcade, bowling alley, and pickle ball court. Wednesday definitely would head to Fort Worth for something different, there’s the Stockyards of course but would also stop by Game Theory Restaurant & Bar. Thursday night of course the place to be is at Marty’s Live for Karaoke with Dat Way Entertainment (CEO Natasha Mosley), so we can sing our hearts out. Friday we would get some food from The Coaches Box in Duncanville and listen to the music by the DJ Mr. Quickness and maybe (depending on if she’s free that night) do some karaoke (yes again) hosted by Shaunie B Entertainment (Shaunell Bennett). Saturday could be a day of adventure or a day of rest since our friend would be heading back out. But if there was a comedy show going on during that time we would suggest that as well. Also, there would probably be a day or two where we would honestly just kick it at the house with a few cocktails.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
We are still striving and pushing forward with getting to where we want to be, of course the support of family and close friends are who we would want to give a shout out to. This ranges from our parents encouraging us to follow what we want to do, our sister Halie and niece Di’Shandra have suggested different ideas based on what they have seen floating around social media that appears to be popular at the time. Even words of encouragement from other fellow YouTubers have kept us on track. All of the people in our life and circle that show love, support, and even offer up video content ideas has not gone unnoticed and is greatly appreciated.
