We had the good fortune of connecting with Imag (emmanuel Anguiano) and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi IMAG, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
When it comes to balance, its really important to know how to juggle your priorities properly. Whenever i started making music I was so focused on that alone that I stopped focusing on whats around (friends, family, etc) . Don’t get me wrong, it’s good to focus on yourself but its also good to take a step back and reset yourself, that way your’e not over-doing it.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What I believe that sets me apart from others is that I just go with whatever I hear in my head. Yeah i use the standard 4×4 kick but when it comes to the elements & structure; that’s where I do my thang. I used to make music that I thought people wanted to hear, completely forgetting why I started in the first place. I want to make music that i want to make while making people feel the way I felt when i first stepped on the dance floor and heard these weird sounds & beats. When it comes to shows or even submitting music to these labels I make sure to be in character & as professional as possible; it’s work babi. I believe everyone has an “image” that the are trying to portray. & I want the world to know what my image is.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend was in town for the week, I’d either take them to eat at this ramen place that I love, this pizza place that i know stays open til 3 or this taco place thats 24 hours.. just depends what we’re feeling. and of course hit up Lower Greenville for some drinks . Maybe hop our way to Deep Ellum to get a little frisky & risky lol. Hit up the underground clubs if there’s something poppin’ in town. I honestly would keep it chill like play some pool, have some drinks & bar food if that’s what the homies want. But if they wanna party, say less, we’re goin’ out for the night. drinks til we outta there.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I definitely would not be here if it weren’t for the harsh criticism one of my good friends gave me a while back on one of my tunes. I was getting annoyed of people giving very bland feedback (this is good, nice, love the sound) Versus it being constructive. So i finally had it & asked someone in the group involving music promo i was in at the time & asked for honest feedback & let me tell you, it was so harsh that my heart hurt. haha, but because of the harsh words about my track, I decided to take that & revamp my song. And after that, I got the song signed to my first big label in france. so shoutout to the harsh criticism!
