We had the good fortune of connecting with Jill Ottinger and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jill, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
How much education hairstylist have! Y’all hairstylist take so much education to keep hair up to date. New techniques, new trends for the upcoming season, and give us all the balayage techniques! Our education doesn’t just stop when we leave cosmetology school. I have learned so much in the past 3 years than I have in all my 14 years of hairstyling!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I hope my guest realize how much I care for them! This is not just my job so I can make money, I come to work to love and care for my guest. It has been super difficult to get to this point of my career. I had to overcome anxiety about double book guest for 11 hours a day and trusting myself enough that I could give everyone the undivided attention they need and deserve. Super proud to have the clientele I have. Its grown so large and knowing I have all these wonderful people trust me with something that is so important to them amazes me!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I am a Fort Worth girl threw and threw! The stock yards is a must! The cattle run, all the stores and the fabulous restaurants. And we could not complete the day without a trip to Billy Bob’s Texas. Talk about a fun time. If you want some honky tonk and a good time go to Billy Bob’s!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I can’t really name just one person! There’s been multiple people in my life that have shaped me as a hairstylist. I assisted the most amazing colorist and haircutter in Colorado when I worked at Veda in Colorado Springs. I can still to this day remember every little detail Erica ever taught me about cutting a bob and Michelle’s color placements. But currently I’m obsessing over Cass Pena whom I met at Fashion Week, let’s talk about hairstyling guru! She’s amazing and if you want to learn how to do a wig wrap she’s your girl! And Alberto Rossell-Davis who is our color educator here at Tangerine Salon. He’s spectacular and to just watch him is something special. All the knowledge he has to offer is so amazing!
