We had the good fortune of connecting with Jackie Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jackie, what do you attribute your success to?
The most important factor of our success is our faith. Business has challenges, ups and downs. Our faith is what kept us moving forward. We couldn’t see ourselves up and running and being a successful restaurant in the beginning. But we had to BELIEVE without proof. We believed in our product. We taught our staff to go over and beyond, and we knew the personal touch would equal repeat business through word of mouth marketing from our customers. You have to believe in yourself, your vision, and your business.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Mother’s Basket Desoto is not just a SoulFood Restaurant. It’s a glimpse of cooking with love and serving with a smile. We are a small, family owned and operated business in Desoto, TX, and we have been welcomed by the Desoto community and surrounding DFW area with open arms. We take pride in being one of only three restaurants in the city to offer SoulFood. Our niche is in our two-prong concept. We offer delicious fried foods during the weekdays and SoulFood only on Sunday’s. This sets us apart from other places, and we use it to our advantage. People naturally want what they can’t have all the time, so having SoulFood once a week brings in a pretty hefty crowd. Did we mention we’re the only place for miles that has smoked ox tails? 🙂 We have faced many obstacles along the way, but we take the challenges as “training moments”. Moments that don’t define the marathon in our business, just the race. We take challenges as learning curves that honestly, just come with being in business. We learn from our mistakes and keep moving forward. Mother’s Basket Desoto isn’t just a good place to get some chicken and dressing, it’s a place to get some food cooked with love. When you walk through the door, we want you to feel like your at your Mother’s.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We would definitely have to see the Dallas World Aquarium, Perot Museum, Dallas Zoo, Klyde Warren Park, Galleria Mall and Fuel City. For Drinks and Eats: we would have to go to Glorias, Del Friscos Grill Downtown, True Kitchen, Pecan Lodge BBQ, and Rudy’s Chicken. And of course On Sunday we would go to Mothers Basket Desoto for some Chicken and Dressing, Candied Yams, Cabbage, BlackEyed Peas and more. We would definitely take a peak at some of the beautiful real estate Dallas has to offer from Preston Hollow to Kessler Park. Nightlife would find us in lower Greenville bar hopping or maybe even Deep Elm for some drinks and Music
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Definitely my Mother Jacqueline. She instilled in me, not only her award-winning recipes, but a solid work ethic, integrity, and commitment. Her teachings gave me a foundation to build not only my restaurant but my personal life as well. Thanks Mom
