Meet Ebony Penland | Entrepreneur, Herbalist, Mom of 3, Wife

We had the good fortune of connecting with Ebony Penland and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ebony, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My initial thought process was to provide amazing self care products to women just like me. To women that work hard for their families and hardly get anytime for themselves. Today, that is my same mission but my thought processes have expanded over the years. I also want financial freedom, generational wealth and to provide more business opportunities.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My business is Pearls Essentials Cosmetics. One thing I can tell you is that for me, starting was not hard at all. In fact, I chose to start my business after making myself a body scrub and after using it, I had an “ah-ha” moment. At that very moment I knew I was onto something good! Now, the hard part for me is pushing through the obstacles because man I tell ya, obstacles in business are so similar and yet very different from your everyday obstacles. I wanted to quit a few times to be honest. I’ve made it through days and even weeks of making NO money, scammers getting bank refunds of over 1k, the pandemic, and running a business while homeless at one point. What helped me overcome is my why and the who. My why is my beautiful loyal customers that tell me how my products have healed issues they’ve had for years &my why is my children who deserve it all. The who is every generation after me reaping the benefit of not living in poverty and having something that is there’s which is Pearls Essentials Cosmetics..a business that they can expand for generations after them.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to first and foremost shoutout God, He gets all the Glory! I would like to shoutout my late Grandma Pearlie (Nama) who I named my brand after. Also shoutout to my support system, My Mom (Crystal Evans), My 3 babies (Ari, Amir and Amari), My husband (Kelvin), My little Brother (Antwon), my friends are pretty dope too (Bertrell, Andrea and Brandi).
