We had the good fortune of connecting with Dezaree’ Lusk and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dezaree’, is there a quote or affirmation that’s meaningful to you?
Yes — my favorite Bible verse is Psalm 119:105:
“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”

In both life and business, I believe deeply in being in relationship and partnership with God. I’ve learned to pray about everything — and to be specific. I often hear people say, “I just pray to make it to next week,” and I think, if that’s all you’re asking for, then that’s all you may receive.

I pray for uncommon success — the kind of favor and opportunity that can only be explained by divine intervention. The doors God has opened for me, the growth I’ve experienced, and the impact I’ve made are not common — and I never take that for granted.

I also pray over my clients — that the products and services I provide become a divine solution in their lives, helping them create positive change in their own world and in the world around them.

God is truly my CEO, and I will continue to follow His word as the light that leads me forward.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
In 2011, I earned my cosmetology license from Duncanville High School. I went on to Prairie View A&M University, where I earned my bachelor’s degree in Social Work. During my time there, I was a cheerleader, studied abroad in Ghana, West Africa, and became a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. After graduating, I entered the Advanced Standing program at the University of Houston. At U of H, I studied abroad to London and Swansea, Wales and was a Globe Fellow. I graduated with my Master’s in Social Work in 2016.

As both a Licensed Cosmetologist and a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, I always dreamed of merging beauty and mental health—creating a business that would be my version of private practice. In 2016, I started laying the foundation for Divine Beauty Bar in honor of my grandfather, a Korean War Veteran who passed away in 2006 from leukemia. Although I had the vision, I didn’t have the money to make it official until 2018.

While researching how to accept insurance for medical wigs, a woman and her two children—who were all veterans—shared with me that they had been paying out of pocket for my wigs and that the VA covered Cranial Prostheses. That moment changed everything.

Since 2018, Divine Beauty Bar has grown to serve VA Hospitals across over 24 states. We provide medical-grade Cranial Prostheses (wigs), Mastectomy Bras, Custom Breast Prosthetics, Lymphedema Compression Garments, and Diabetic Shoes to veterans and patients using Medicare, Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, United Healthcare, ChampVA, Tricare, and more. We are also a fully accredited Durable Medical Equipment (DME) Facility and Cosmetology School.

Getting here hasn’t been easy. It’s taken serious investment—time, money, and relentless advocacy. One of our biggest challenges has been gatekeeping. In one VA facility, veterans have been intentionally directed away from our services due to comments like, “We need to spread the wealth… she can’t do everything.” But Divine Beauty Bar was built to do everything. We are a one-stop shop—because when someone is battling cancer, hair loss, or a double mastectomy, they shouldn’t have to visit five different places for care.

Another challenge has been being denied access to advanced trainings from suppliers, even when we meet every requirement. It’s hard not to feel like the goal is to keep a young, Black woman in a box. But I don’t fit in boxes—I build doors. Every roadblock has inspired me to expand, innovate, and reach further. That’s why we launched our own cosmetology school—to help others who’ve been overlooked gain access and opportunity.

What sets Divine Beauty Bar apart is our empathy-driven, tech-forward approach. If a veteran is homebound or dealing with complex medical needs, we go to them. We use advanced 3D scanning to get exact measurements for wigs, breast forms, and diabetic shoes—from anywhere in the world. Our breast prosthetics are custom matched to each client’s skin tone, providing dignity and confidence.

Divine Beauty Bar will continue to lead in prosthetics and medical supply with compassion, precision, and Black excellence. I thank God for the vision, the pivots, and the perseverance. We’re just getting started.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Dallas is such a beautiful city and I am 100% a foodie! Friday night we’d kick things off with dinner and dancing to live music at The Free Man Cajun Cafe & Lounge—it’s such a vibe. I don’t really follow a strict day-by-day itinerary when I host guests, because I love going with the flow and letting the energy guide us. But here’s a list of my go-to Dallas spots that I’d absolutely show off during the week:

For an elevated dining experience, we’re going to The Monarch—my favorite steakhouse with amazing food and an even better view. After dinner, we’d head upstairs to Kessaku, a swanky cocktail lounge on the 50th floor for great drinks and even greater ambiance.

Other stunning spots with delicious food and aesthetics: Te Deseo and Sun Blossom are must-visits.

For drinks and lounging, The Statler’s Waterproof rooftop bar and Virgin Hotel’s Commons Club always deliver.

Throughout the week, we’d explore Deep Ellum—hopping from Ebb & Flow, Vidora, and Stirr, to that fun little arcade bar I always forget the name of, but never forget the fun. I would also take her to Bishop Arts District

Sunday morning church at Friendship West Baptist Church and later soul-soothing live music at The Armory, one of my favorite hidden gems.

And because my family means everything to me and we’re always doing something together, I’d plan a joint outing where my best friend could meet them. We’d rent the Dallas Party Bike and cruise the city—Good Surf Beach Club would definitely be one of the stops!

No matter what we end up doing, it’s guaranteed to be filled with good food, good energy, and unforgettable memories.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to my mother. She has truly given her entire life to ensure that my sister, myself, and so many of our family members are cared for. She has always believed that with just a little love and support, anyone can be successful.

Even now, at 32 years old, there’s not a single event I’m part of where she isn’t present. Her consistent presence has made me feel truly unstoppable — like anything I touch can turn to gold. And even when things don’t go as planned, I know I gave it my all, and that little bit of faith and support made the effort worth it.

She doesn’t always understand what I’m doing or why I’m doing it — but she’s always there, showing up with love, tough advice, and unwavering support. I owe so much of who I am and what I’ve built to her.
