We had the good fortune of connecting with Courtney Copeland and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Courtney, what do you attribute your success to?
The single most important factor in being successful has been connecting and building personal relationships with my clients. I get to know these people, I become apart of their families, their stories, the biggest moments of their lives. 90% of my business is from word of mouth referrals from my clients. I have done many weddings where bridesmaids I have shot before turn into my brides and I love that! Relationships are everything. In this industry, knowing the technical side of things is important but I would disagree with anyone who says that it is the most important.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Photography can be a tough industry. It is very saturated and it is also very subjective. What I love and what I think looks good may not be what everyone loves and looks good and that’s okay! That’s what makes the world such an interesting place. I’m thankful for the clients who love my work and see my visions and let me run with it and those people are the reason that I’ve gotten to where I am today. There will always been those clients that you can’t please and you can’t make happy and that’s okay, I’m not for everyone. That has been one of the hardest pills to swallow, to not get easily offended (enneagram 6 over here) and to realize that people are their own toughest critics. I picked up a camera at age 20 when I couldn’t afford my baby’s newborn photos. I never looked back after that. I had an idea, I had no clue how I was going to make it happen but I ran with it. There will always be ups, downs and people trying to tell you what to do (or not do) but you have to stay true to yourself and your vision for what you want your life to look like.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best out-of-town friend was visiting (she lives in Wisconsin), I would love to take her to: The Stockyards Rodeo Concert at Billy Bobs The Reata Top Golf The Basement Bar Fort Worth Food Truck Park Kung Fu BSR in Waco Walk around Sundance Square Shops at Legacy

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My parents definitely deserve the recognition for my success. They’ve always pushed me and instilled the value of hard work in me. They supported every dream and idea I’ve ever had, even the off the wall ones. As a photographer, I primarily shoot on the weekends so for the past 5 years, juggling being a single parent and a full-time photographer was hard. They picked up the slack without any hesitation. They have always loved and supported not only me and my dreams but have supported and loved my children as well while I was developing my career.
