We had the good fortune of connecting with April Joy Martinez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi April Joy, how does your business help the community or world?
During these difficult and busy times many of us can become overwhelmed with the day to day chaos. With virtual learning, working from home and additional financial stressors as a result of life and the pandemic the need for additional resources has greatly increased. There are many people dealing with anxiety and depression that leads to the inability or lack of desire to take care of the tedious things such as cleaning, shopping, completing tasks for work or running errands. Joyous Gems would like to partner with these individuals or families and add a support to move them through these times but also has a therapeutic component to encourage and uplift them for years to come. We all need support with various tasks and I am able to help provide those while also understanding how things may have gotten to the point where you may need the help. I would like to create lifetime partners on this journey called life.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I have been in social services for 19 years and know that this is my purpose, to advocate and help others. I was going down a very different path career wise but it seemed that every position or person that I encountered lead me to the helping profession. I have worked for several social service agencies and non profits over the years and none of those positions were without challenges. Because of the field you can often be overworked and underpaid because of the need. I was always fulfilled for the mere fact that I knew I was helping someone every day. I may have been helping indirectly at times but their lives were better because there were places like those that were created to help and support. I am most excited about the fact that my natural talents of planning, organizing and helping are allowing me to create an environment and business that I can do easily because of the passion I have. I am living and walking in my purpose.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
When my best friends visit we don’t do a lot of going out. We get together at my home or a home of another friend generally. We all enjoy deep, intimate and relaxing atmospheres and conversations. I am usually the planner and the cook for most of our get togethers which makes me happy. If we did go out though we would probably eat Mexican food, sit on a patio or rooftop and talk and laugh. I love nature so we might take a stroll through the park and listen to music. There is nothing like good music, good conversation and a good drink to enjoy with friends.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to thank each and everyone of my friends and family that have encouraged me throughout my life. I think my biggest thanks would be to my mother who I lost a few years ago for her unwavering love and understanding of who I am. I found out that my mother was an advocate and I have been drawn to that field since I was a teenager and did not even know that I inherited that from her. She was strong, independent and loving and has motivated me even through her death to keep going. Without all of these individuals I could not have made it this far or known that I could be an entrepreneur. Stepping out on faith was the best decision for my life. I am forever grateful.
