We had the good fortune of connecting with Valarie Polk and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Valarie, let’s start by talking about what inspires you?
Life experiences and hardships. Those were the times where I felt more inclined to write because it would take me to a place mentally that would bring me a peace of mind. No matter what I was going through at that moment, just being able to create whomever I wanted in my stories, gave me strength.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a film and TV writer. I wrote my first film in 2007. What sets me apart from other writers is I write through my life experiences, especially when it’s challenging or painful. It seems to allow me to go to another place mentally and I become more creative that way. I am most excited about my own true story that I have written. I believe it will be able to touch the world because it’s a real impactful story and I’m ready to share it. I got to where I am today because of my husband being my biggest cheerleader, he always pushed me and supported me and he actually believed in me more than I believe in myself. It was not easy to get to where I am. I’ve had a lot of personal issues and struggles along the way, which gave me some minor setbacks and I didn’t desire to write anymore, but I soon realized I had stories to tell that I wanted to share with the world, so I had to keep writing. How I overcame the challenges that I went through was definitely my faith, family and friends. Those were the key things that kept me going and gave me the strength to do it. The lessons I’ve learned is never judge a book by its cover, because you never know what it took for someone to get to where they are today. What I want the world to know about me and my brand and story is that I stay true to myself. When I write i keep my audience in mind, so they won’t just enjoy it but they’ll always remember it.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Who is start off with Lunch at Pappadeaux’s restaurant. We’ll catch a Dallas Cowboy football game and hang out at Dave & Buster’s or the main event. I would definitely stay at the Omni Hotel downtown Dallas so we could actually walk around and sight see. The most interesting and exciting people to see is definitely at a sporting event.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to give a shout out to my good friend Rhlonda Washington for her support and encouragement along the way when times got tough for me. She always believed in me. Shout out to Vannessa Goodrich for her inspiration and dedication to helping me in my new film career and for always pushing me to go further. Contura Thompson has always been there for me when I didn’t always believe in myself. She had the faith to believe that I was going to make it one day, just don’t give up. She’s been a rock for me.
