We had the good fortune of connecting with Tenni King and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tenni, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
When I first started working for my mentor, the whole idea behind the job was that I would assist her for a few years, get introduced to all the ins and outs of the business, learn from every encounter, and soak up all the lessons/experiences I could from that opportunity. I went into that experience knowing the end game, my own business. This thought semi-terrified me at the time, but I slowly gained more confidence and knew I was meant to do this. No doubt in my mind! After being with her for about three years, I realized it was kind of now or never. I was never going to be 100% ready to launch, but I am a firm believer in “if your dreams don’t scare you, they aren’t big enough.” So I pushed myself to trust in myself and decided to take the leap. This is my dream job! If not now, when? And here we are, 1.5 years later!

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Well Fashioned by Tenni King is a wardrobe styling & personal shopping business. I offer closet editing, shopping, styling, and packing services (now even virtually). I think what sets me apart from others in the business is my ability to maximize the clothes that are in your current closet. By showing my clients how to wear clothes they already own in new, fresh ways, they will see that their beloved items don’t need to be donated or resold. They can continue to wear their prized possessions for years to come. The styling process is my favorite part of my job. The clothes really come to life when you put them together in an outfit. You are able to highlight the client’s personality and make the look just for them! For example, a top on one person would not be styled the same on another person. They are different people with different styles with different pieces in their closet. That’s what makes styling so fun! There’s always a variety of new goodies to work with. The possibilities are endless!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I am obviously really into the shopping scene in Dallas, but I’m also a big foodie. In my free time, I really enjoy checking out new restaurants and bars around town. It’s kind of hilarious that I’ve listed more restaurants than places to shop in my must-visit list. Quite ironic, if you ask me! See below for some of my Dallas favs!

Shopping:
1. Highland Park Village – for some window shopping & lunch at Bird Bakery
2. Esther Penn & Reformation on Henderson – they are across the street from each other
3. Cabana – swoon-worthy clothing worth checking out!
4. Tootsie’s – everything is always so on point and on trend!
5. North Park Mall – in my opinion, my favorite mall I’ve ever been to!
Restaurants:
1. The Charles – for to die for Italian food!
2. Oiishi – for sushi
3. Honor Bar – for delicious food and people watching!
4. Mi Cocina (in HP Village) – for Mexican food and mambo taxis, of course!
5. Hudson House – for the most amazing burger you’ll ever have!
6. Origin Kitchen – for healthy brunch
7. Paradiso – great place to sit out on the patio in Bishop Arts
8. Cane Rosso – for the best pizza!
Drinks:
1. Leela’s – for wine night with the girls
2. The Rustic – for great live music
3. HG Supply rooftop – for great views of the city!
4. The Old Monk – such a great dive bar!
Other activities:
1. Walk on the Katy Trail (followed by a beer at KT Ice House)
2. Picnic at Lakeside
3. Take a Soulcycle class at their Uptown location

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are so many women in my life that have helped shape me into the person I am today! From the beginning, my mom always showed me that whatever I wanted to accomplish was possible. She always encouraged me to strive for my dreams. I never felt like anything was out of my reach because of her. I really thank her to this day for inspiring me to believe in myself! Another woman, who I mentioned in my previous response, is my mentor, Nancy Klompus of NK Buy Request. She is the reason I have my business today! She really took me under her wing by showing me how the business works, introducing me to clients and stores in Dallas, and learning her styling process. That experience truly changed the course of my career. I feel so lucky to have had her as a boss, friend, and mentor! My family and friends also deserve a huge shoutout for being my biggest cheerleaders. Especially in times like we are all going through now, they have really helped lift me up and remind me why I do what I do in the first place. I am so lucky to have them in my corner! They are such a blessing!
