We had the good fortune of connecting with Taylor Salerno and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Taylor, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I have always been artistic and independent. When I was in junior high we all took a test that helped us identify what work environment we would thrive in and I scored highest in creative entrepreneurship. At the time I didn’t really pay attention to it but once I started playing around with a camera in high school it all clicked. This is what I am meant to do; this is my calling. I have so much passion for what I do and my clients can feel it. Capturing someones wedding story is not just a job for me – it’s my way of using my gift to give back to people moments that they will cherish forever. I freaking love it.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I call myself the “unprofessional, professional” photographer. Sounds weird but it pretty much sums me up. The reason I say that is because I treat my clients just like I treat my best friends. We crack jokes, we send funny GIFs, we dance together at weddings, and I make a complete fool out of myself just to get them to laugh for the photo. Works every time. I am so proud of where I am today because I have built this from the ground up just by being myself. People like that. People want to see your life and the funny things your kids do. I wouldn’t say it’s been difficult, but it has been a long road. Mainly because of everyday life but I don’t regret anything. It’s never too late to start your dream but YOU have to be the one to make that first step. The world isn’t just going to hand it to you, honey.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I have lived in Dallas pretty much my whole life but I gotta be honest, I still have a lot of exploring to do myself. I have always been more of a country girl so nature has my heart. So does tacos. Here’s what I’d whip up though. Sunday – Lake day! Tubing and Party Cove at Lake Lewisville. Monday – Breakfast at The Biscuit Bar in Plano and then walking around Legacy West Tuesday – It’s Taco Tuesday; Velvet Taco it is! Wednesday – Walking around Bishop Arts and Deep Ellum. Have to stop at Emporium Pies. Thursday – Bishop Cidercade. Craft beer and SO many arcade games. Friday – Another Round Mini Golf! Saturday – Country dancing is a must. Neon Moon at the Stockyards or Electric Cowboy!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My husband and my sister-in-law deserve all of the shoutouts. My husband has always supported my dream and has always pushed me to do more when I have hesitated and second guessed myself. My sister-in-law is also a local wedding photographer and we have worked together for years. We are always bouncing ideas off of one another, call each other at midnight when we have a question, and overall have a great time working together. We launched our businesses right around the same time so it was very comforting going through the same things together with someone that was experiencing it all as well.
