We had the good fortune of connecting with Taylør Giørdanø and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Taylør, what is the most important factor behind your success?
I believe the most important factor behind any sort of success is always self motivation. There was many doubts that came into my path weather it was towards my freelance or my clothing company. I used those doubts to push to prove that I will not fail and come out bigger and better then ever. Being the face of Bad Alien it gave me so many opportunities to meet incredible people to help myself grow as a artist. We as collective individual artist brought together can be the most powerful force in the creative world.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Being a woman in the male dominated screen printing industry can be hard, but I knew that couldn’t stop me. It gave me a chance to prove myself and my capabilities. In college i was the black sheep in the class creative colorful more expressive style art while everyone kept to the basic modern style. That’s when I knew that I’d be standing out in a positive and negative way. But I knew since high school I wanted to create my own clothing company but I didn’t know when would be the right time to start it due to the fact I was swamped with projects being a full time student. But that wasn’t an option I pushed myself busting out designs late nights after finishing homework just preparing myself for the day I was financially ready. I wanted to create a brand that was different, that stood out with hidden messages as fashionable wearable art. I wanted people to walk part my booth at a festival and do that double take.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well let’s imagine this is a week road trip, I’m currently living in Florida but was born and raised on Long Island for 17 years so a lot of the places I enjoy are half in Florida/NY . Well start with Florida, I recently came into contact with a guy who owns a huge collective art space property on a fat plot of land.We do a lot of events with Live painters, vendors, fire spinner and DJS. The collective grew into a family a safe space for us to come together and create and meet new people. We detour towards Sarasota to Myakka State Park to enjoy some nature and soak in the sun. It’s a great place to relax And do some art and take some pictures. Fast forward to NY the vibe and environment is totally different then FL. There’s a lot more suspenseful thing to do, We head over to our next destination Kings Park Asylum. One of my favorite spots to bring anyone who comes to NY. It’s been abandoned since 1997 it held the most high risk patents in the tristate area. Still to this day I haven’t visited all 50 buildings. The graffiti art there is so mind blowing that at this point the Asylum is an art piece. I’m all about exploring new places and making new memories no matter where we are in the world.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Back in high school there was this teacher I had who saw the creative abilities I had before I even knew I had them. He continued to push me for my four years in high school with all these classes to improve my Digital Graphics skills. Some seniors year he introduced me to screen printing and since then it really sent my path on what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. After I graduated high school I reached out with a long thank you message to him for everything he did for me to bring me to who I am today in the art world. Little did I know I got an email back and a tee shirt order from him telling me how proud he was of me and that beyond touches me.
