We had the good fortune of connecting with Tamara Walker and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tamara, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I’ve always had an entrepreneurial spirit. My plan was not only to become an entrepreneur, but to be successful in starting a real business, employing people, and providing a real service to customers. The only way I knew to get started was by learning a marketable skill and getting to work. In my experience that’s where the ideas, opportunities, and partners seem to generate. It takes an enormous amount of hard work, but that just comes with the territory.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
In September 2018, I decided to LEAP from my secure 9 – 5 job as a licensed property adjuster to pursue full-time entrepreneurship. I am a Federal Licensed Property & Transportation Broker, I arrange transportation of freight by trucks, rail, sea and air. We can accommodate dry or temperature-controlled products using our warehouse partners. My trucking company Krewe Transport is a second business established in December 2019 to hire owner operators to lease onto the company and transport my customers freight by truck. What sets me apart from others is my strong inner drive to grow. In addition to the brokerage and trucking company, I have been selected to participate in a comprehensive training program through the City of Fort Worth to gain knowledge about the construction industry. This is important to me because it will contribute to the growth of my company and provide an opportunity to get involved in the economic growth of the city. I am also planning the development of a transportation management system. This platform will provide a service to other fellow transportation brokers in managing their customers, motor carriers, documents, generation of invoices and accounting, dispatch, and GPS tracking. There will also be an optional feature for electronic data interchange capabilities. I have already given this platform a name “The Gator.” We are currently in the process of becoming a Customs Bonded freight carrier which gives us authority to transport FTZ ( Foreign Trade Zone) freight from any port to the border. My last goal for the company is obtaining a Customs Broker license which gives us authority to assist in clearing imported goods our current and future customers may have. Krewe Logistics has been designated as a WBE ( Women’s Business Enterprise), WOSB ( Woman Owned Small Business) DBE ( Disadvantage Business Enterprise), HUB ( Historically Underutilized Business) and SBE ( Small Business Enterprise). The road was not always smooth. When I first started this venture it took months before I landed my first customer. At one point I doubted my success in the business due to a slow start. Entrepreneurs come from humble beginnings, so long as you are willing to work hard, commit to your ideas, and take the risks necessary to see those ideas become reality. Be inspired by those who have come before you and do not let lack of experience dissuade you from following your dreams.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I live in the DFW area and I am a huge fan of live music, concerts, and nature. For an amazing brunch and dinner I would take them to Breadwinner’s Café, Trulucks, Pappasitos, or The Boiling Crab. I love great food! As for other entertainment we would visit Scatz Jazz Lounge, Lava Cantina, The Statler, Klyde Warren Park, the African American Museum or White Rock Lake and enjoy the scenery.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to thank God for bringing me this far in such a short period of time. I would also like to acknowledge a few people that have motivated me. My business mentor and dad who encouraged me on starting my own business and instilled important values that contributes to my success. My husband for his support and advice. My daughters who I live for and who I want to set an example for. I want them to know that the possibilities are endless. My friends with 20 plus years in the transportation business whom I have incorporated some of their ideas into my own business model.
