We had the good fortune of connecting with Stephanie Elwell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Stephanie, can you share the most important lesson you’ve learned over the course of your career?
The most important lesson that my business has taught me is to not be afraid of pricing my value. In the beginning of a business, it’s hard to price your work because you feel like customers will not want to buy from you. So you lower your value thinking that that’s what will get you customers. In reality, the quality of your work is what will get you customers, and the customers that value your work are more than willing to pay those prices..
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My company Drips is my art. This is how I express myself. I make custom cakes with my artistic flare. I don’t like to copy others work, because I love to make unique desserts and cakes.
During the pandemic is when I finally got the opportunity to begin my dream, which is to have my own business. I hope to have a store front someday soon.
It hasn’t been an easy ride! A lot of sleepless nights, sweat, and tears. I knew this walking into it. However, I’m enduring this rollercoaster, and learning so much along the way.
I’ve learned to not be afraid to give value to my work and my time. And to not be afraid to say NO. That one was the hardest!
Before Drips, I was working in hotels, resorts, and country clubs as a professional pastry chef, I suffered a lot in a man’s world. I was usually the only female chef and had to deal with a lot of discrimination and mental abuse. As well as a lower pay grade!
I’m so happy to now have my own business where I am my own boss and no longer have to put up with men that belittle you.
DRIPS stands for all female chefs/cooks/bakers that have been able to recognize that our value in the industry is as important and equal to men’s.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I wish I knew, all I do is work! And when I’m not working, I’m resting.
But here are some places I would suggest:
Downtown Dallas
Fort Worth Stockyards
Fort Worth Zoo
Six Flags
Sprinkles Cupcakes
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to give a shout out to my husband Michael Elwell. He’s not only my husband but my business partner as well. He’s there To help me in every step of the way, no questions asked. I couldn’t do it without him!
