We had the good fortune of connecting with Starr Craft and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Starr, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
The thought process behind starting my own business was straightforward; I have been thrifting, cobbling, and upcycling furniture for as long as I can remember. I decided in 2019 to turn my hobby into a full-time business after many years of being a fashion stylist to friends, and upcycling furniture was natural for me. Nothing delights me more than seeing an undesirable piece of furniture transform into something beautiful. I love all things vintage, especially vintage clothing and super cute vintage hats. The boutique offers various vintage shopping, including vintage clothing, custom furniture and decor, and upscaling services. Although I am pursuing a doctor of strategy and innovation degree, Upscaling and thrifting is my passion!

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
What sets me apart from other upscale artists, I specialize in custom modern and eclectic upscaling furnishing tailor-made just for you. My God’s gift talent has allowed me to see past the undesirable vintage pieces and helps me to restore and create masterpieces. I would like to share how I got to where I am today business-wise. Everyone thought I was nuts! When I decided to turn my hobby into a full-time business in 2019, I started sourcing all things vintage. It was not an easy transition from a hobby with no pressure to a full-time business. I can’t tell you how many times I have hauled furniture in my Mazda 6, sticking out the back of my trunk, hoping I didn’t get pulled over by the police. I once moved in my Mazda-6, a beautiful railroad bench measuring 10 feet long; the legendary story that it was from a New York railroad station. I have been in positions where I’ve seen undesirable and broken vintage furniture that I vision to make extraordinary, but I didn’t have a plan for how I could get the piece home. I overcame the challenges by taking a risk every day because I am passionate about what I do, so in 2022, I turned my business into an LLC. Another barrier I overcame was sourcing a vendor for furniture pickup. One of my prayer list items is a company cargo van and employees. I could not run my business alone; are a few lessons I’ve learned along the way. I am grateful for the love, support, and physical help from my dear friends and family to help elevate my business. Also, it’s critical to have a business plan that is fluid. Lastly, always be open to new knowledge and continuing education in your field. I want the world to know I am passionate about style and purposeful in creating every piece. I would love the opportunity to share with the world Vintage Starr Boutique LLC! @Vintagestarrboutique.com

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take my best friend to the Dallas museums and Fort Worth Orchestra! It’s something about symphony and jazz music that is a delight to my ears. We would eat at Del Frisco’s Double Eagle Steakhouse in Fort Worth, and of course, I would wear one of the vintage hats I sell. And, of course, I would squeeze in time for a bit of vintage shopping.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate this shoutout to my Lord Jesus Christ and savior. God has given me the natural gift and grace to upscale unwanted & broken pieces of furniture and to see the vision for something extraordinary. The support of my women’s prayer group has covered me in prayer and love. I also like to acknowledge that my high school best friend Josette has supported me throughout the years. And my best friend Earnest listens to my ideas and always has encouraging words to speak into my life. My mother’s continued prayers and my dear friend Michell, nieces & nephew, and a host of incredible friends who volunteered countless hours to propel my business forward. God’s favor allows me to be creative, and I acknowledge Jesus Christ in all I do.
