We had the good fortune of connecting with Shureka Ward and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shureka, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I’m convinced that at some point, we’ve all thought about being in total control of ourselves, not necessarily having to answer to anyone. At the time I initially entertained the idea of blogging, I wasn’t necessarily thinking of it as a lucrative field/profession. I only knew I loved to share fashion and beauty related content with others and blogging was a great way to do just that. Now that I have far more insight than I did before embarking on this journey, the business side of being a creative is what’s keeping me intrigued. My desire to continue building what I’ve started with Southern City Lights is something I’m extremely excited about!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
From the selected descriptions, the only option I could even consider was other! My only explanation for this is that I was blessed with so many talents. This is in no way meant to come off in a bragging manner; simply put, I’m no longer able to identify myself using only one descriptor. Having studied criminal justice, business, and psychology, I later decided I was equally interested in exploring my creative side(s). So, to answer this question, I can only say; I do a plethora of things. I’m a social services advocate, a mentor, content creator, graphic designer, fashion stylist, and interior designer. I could easily add more titles but will happily stop there. One thing I truly feel sets me apart from others is my ability to do all the things I mentioned exceptionally well. I like to sometimes think of myself as a one woman show. I’m my own team and that’s something I’m quite proud of. As a full time working individual, with many projects of my own, I have to remain focused. I would love to commit 100% of my time to Southern City Lights but that’s something I’m simply unable to do at this very moment. Through continued hard work and dedication, who knows what lies ahead! Having recently embarked on my most recent journey of becoming a graphic designer, I’ve been staying quite busy!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
This question is one that always makes me chuckle, no matter who asks! My best friend of 19 years, who I met in college, is the truest definition of my total opposite. Everything I love, she absolutely despises. The one question we’re asked by many is how we’ve maintained such a long standing friendship. The answer to that question is music; music has always been the one thing we’ve shared that we both loved. That being said, the answer to your question is anything related to our love of music and good food! No matter the city, we’re always able to find delicious restaurants with live music, cultural museums, and thrifting (which is more her thing). Oh, there’s one other thing we share in common; we love to lounge around! She’s that one friend you never have to set an alarm for!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
No successful journey is taken alone! I would love to shoutout ALL the individuals who’ve taken time to read a blog post, watch a YouTube video, solicited any of the many services I provide, shared any of my content, or simply whispered words of encouragement along the way! You are all very much appreciated!
