We had the good fortune of connecting with Shaun Mecca and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shaun, how do you think about risk?
In the music business, you have to take the risk. You have to travel, you have to do that FREE show sometimes, you’re going to come out broke most of the time. But the reward after a show when people are asking for autographs and you see your merch flying off the table is worth that risk.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Born in Dallas, Texas, in December 1987, I spent his formative years soaking up the vibrant culture of the Rio Grande Valley after my family relocated to Donna, Texas. Raised amidst the rich tapestry of South Texas life, I found himself drawn to the beat of the local hip-hop scene.
My journey into music began in the pulsating rhythm of hip-hop, where he honed my craft and made my mark, sharing stages with icon like Lil Wayne, Bone Thugs-n-Harmony and many others. However, the artistic evolution took an unexpected turn in 2020 when I felt the pull towards the heartfelt storytelling and raw emotion of country music.
Embracing this newfound passion, I embarked on a musical transformation, blending elements of hip-hop with the soulful melodies of country to create a genre-defying sound some call “outlaw country hip-hop.” This fusion resonated deeply with audiences, propelling my music to new heights of popularity across social media platforms including TikTok, where this unique style found a devoted following.
From the bustling streets of Dallas to the tranquil landscapes of the Rio Grande Valley, my journey has been a testament to the power of embracing change and following one’s heart. Through music, I strive to capture the essence of my roots while pushing the boundaries of genre, inviting listeners to join on a sonic adventure unlike any other.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
In the Rio Grande Valley, there are tons of great spots to eat at! Vargas BBQ in Edinburg Tx, Tacos Y Todo in Mcallen, and my hometown favorite…GONZALEZ BURGERS in Donna Tx! Definitely a staple when visiting my hometown.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First and foremost, God gets the glory! Without him, I wouldn’t be here or have this talent. Shout out to all the fans who genuinely support me, who listen, who actually care what I drop. Shout out to my family and friends who travel with me and who support when they don’t have to.
