We had the good fortune of connecting with Lisa Featherston and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lisa, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I am inherently risk averse. I’m often afraid of the unknown and therefore turn to what I’m comfortable with. I find comfort in food and creativity. Baking was once my form of stress relief during law school. For many, many years I baked for family, friends, coworkers, neighbors, and basically anyone I could convince to indulge in sweets. I gave away all of my treats for free just because it brought me joy to share with others. When I decided to leave my professional career to become a full time homemaker in 2019, my passion for cooking and baking intensified. However, despite many friends urging me to turn my craft into a career, I was too afraid to put myself out there. It wasn’t until January 2024 (after consistently posting my food content for 5 years) that I even created a separate Instagram account for my food and creative content. I finally decided to take the leap and create Lisa’s Little Things. Without much thought, I made an Instagram account, Facebook account, and little website and just started to upload my content that I had gathered over the years. I told myself that I would just launch “my business” and figure it out along the way. I don’t have an entrepreneurial bone in my body and didn’t have a clear vision for LLT as a business. However, I am confident that I want to continue to create delicious and beautiful things and actually get paid for my work. So here we are, only five months into Lisa’s Little Things and momentum is building. I have been consistently receiving orders for custom cakes, cupcakes, cookies, and meal prepping. I’m so glad I took that first step and look forward to seeing where LLT might take me.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a former attorney. However, the legal field didn’t ignite a passion within me. I never really felt like I fit the mold for a lawyer. I took my background in trusts & estates and worked in the wealth management departments of law firms and banks serving high net worth families. I enjoyed working as a trust officer and took pride in my job. In my free time, I turned to cooking and baking as my creative outlet. I worked in a professional capacity up until I had my first son, at which point I exited the workforce to stay home. It was an easy decision for my family and one that I am immensely grateful for. I feel that I’m just now, at 36 years old, finding my true calling.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I am still rather new to DFW, so I’m not super familiar with the hot spots to go yet! If we were still living in Chicago, I would take my best friend to all of the scenic spots and hottest restaurants in the city. Now that I live in Roanoke, I would show them my cute and charming small town. We would walk two blocks to Oak St. and try out various bars and restaurants. We would relax by my pool as my chickens roam my backyard. I would then take my friend to the Stockyards in Fort Worth for a fun filled culture shock followed by some fine dining in Dallas, and if we’re being honest, most likely a late night indulgent dessert at home.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My husband, Ryan, deserves a shoutout as his efforts and support afford me the freedom to pursue my passions. I must also recognize my peers for their constant support through the years. Every little direct message complimenting my food or comment suggesting I should monetize brought me just an ounce more of confidence that finally led me to start my business. I would have never launched if it weren’t for the unrelenting encouragement of my friends and family.
