We had the good fortune of connecting with Ronnie Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ronnie, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
It’s something I have always wanted to do. From an early age, I was very interested in how and why things worked the way they did. When I was younger it was things like black holes. As I got older, I grew more interested in how businesses worked specifically. It’s been fun to get a taste of all of that theory first hand.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
GOODFOLKS is a small, but mighty, design, development, and branding studio. We work with clients all over the world on problems big and small that need a really high caliber, focused approach. What started as me freelancing on nights and weekends, has grown into a company of 4 full-time designers and developers, or good folks, that keep things moving for our clients. The addition of other people has been one of the most exciting and terrifying parts of running my own business. When it was just me, it was really easy to make quick decisions, knowing that it would only impact me. Now, every decision has to be carefully considered to understand how it’ll affect everyone on the team. Some things are simple like how do we handle time-off, but others can get really complex like handling tough situations with a client or another team member. On paper, GOODFOLKS isn’t much different than lots of other creative studies that have come before us. What I hope sets us apart at the end of the day is how we care for our clients and each other along the way.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Living in Mckinney, we get a lot of jokes about basically being in Oklahoma. And for a lot of our clients that are in Dallas, it’s pretty true. But I will say, downtown Mckinney has a lot to offer. Before COVID, my family and I would eat pizza at Cadillac just about every weekend followed by coffee at Snug on The Square the next morning. It has such a classic downtown square vibe and some really incredible businesses. For those that know Dallas, Emporium Pies is all I need to say. For those that don’t, go grab a slice of pie that’ll change your life.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are more people than I could count that have helped me along the way. Some of the most important and influential have been, of course, my wife, my parents, and several mentors I’ve had throughout the years. Each one bringing a different type of feedback that’s helped me get to where I am today.
