We had the good fortune of connecting with Rob Greene and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rob, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
In the past, I thought it worked like this: Risk = Scary. Risk = Fear. Risk = Potential Failure. Over the past few years, I’ve come to realize that Risk = Opportuntiy. Risk = Adventure. Risk = Potential Success. Stepping into a full-time photography career was risky, but it’s led to opportunities, adventures, and successes I could have only dreamed of before making the leap. Sure, there are hard lessons learned, lumps taken, and failures experienced. But those things teach and guide and equip us to hopefully make a better choice the next time if we’ll let them. The idea of risk has come up huge this year. When COVID-19 shut down the city where I live back in March, I could’ve chosen to shrivel up and be depressed and frustrated. Instead, I decided to take a risk. We rented a local studio the day before lockdown, and recorded an online version of a Flash Course I’ve been teaching live to wedding and event photographers. Building this course was a huge risk: it’s taken 100’s of hours to put together, and a lot of financial resources during a down year for our business. But the opportunities this course has created for the future of our company have been tremendous! You can learn more about the Flash Course here: https://www.square8studio.com/flash-course
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Two things set Square 8 Studio apart: (1) We are like the TOMS of photography: for every photo shoot we book, we give away a photo shoot! We’ve used these shoots to provide family photos to families who are adopting, senior photos to students who are the first graduate in their family, and weddings to couples who are making a difference in the world through acts of service! For more info on our free weddings: https://vimeo.com/318111737 (2) We are currently teaching the only plain language Flash Course on the market, for photographers who want their gear to fade into the background so they can focus on loving and serving their clients! If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Fort Worth is home to some UNREAL places to eat. A few of my personal favs are Pizza Snob, Heim, and B&B Butcher. Personally, I’d skip the stockyards unless you’re just really into cowboy stuff… Fort Worth has way better places to hang! Check out the Trinity River Trailhead, Airfield Falls, Sundance Square, and TCU’s Campus (their football field is accessible 24 hours a day – never seen a school offer something like that!)
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Huge shoutout to the incredible photographers who have supported our vision for this Flash Course and helped make it the incredible resource it has become through their candid feedback along the way! Folks like Jocelyn and Spencer Johnson, Araka Walker, Cara Parker, Charlie Martin have all been such a huge motivation to continue to risk even when I’ve felt like giving up!
