We had the good fortune of connecting with Nate Thomas and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nate, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
We are successful because we are different. People are tired of the same old thing and they want something new. Every single one of our blends contains one or more unique ingredients only made by us. We use fermentation, smoking, extractions, and infusions to create custom flavors you can’t get anywhere else. We believe that the main reason people don’t like to cook at home is because it’s too much work, especially if the meal they make seems bland or boring. Not only are our blends special, but they are delicious and easy to use. People tell us all the time that when they reach for a Sandcastle product they feel a confidence they didn’t have before. If cooking at home is more exciting, easier, and tastes better you will do it more often. That is something that is core to our brand.

What should our readers know about your business?
We were running our own catering business before the pandemic hit. When the cancellations started rolling in we felt that the writing was on the wall and closed down. We knew that wasn’t the end of our story and got right to work trying to reorganize our resources into a new concept. With our catering business we had been using unique spice blends that our customers loved. What made us successful was that our food tasted different and exciting; how could we put that in a bottle that people could use at home? After many months of taste testing and designing we had 3 blends we were satisfied with and sent prototypes to friends and relatives to try. The feedback was unanimous: “How can you get more?” Changing over from hospitality to manufacturing was a massive undertaking and every time we made a mistake, we learned from it and moved on. We have been successful enough to buy a production facility for our company and spent the first months of 2022 renovating the space. While building Sandcastle has been the greatest challenge of our lives, we chose to view every hurdle along the way as an opportunity instead of a setback. If we have any advice to give it’s this – Never give up. Even if you have to move on from a dream or idea, it’s not the end. There is always a way forward as long as you are willing to put in the time and effort!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We moved to Dallas at unique time in history; right at the beginning of the pandemic. Because of that we have gotten to know the city more slowly but that hasn’t stopped us from putting down roots. We love the outdoors so picking a day to enjoy the Dallas Arboretum is an absolute must! We would take some food and drinks with us for a picnic lunch. Snacks and cocktails at Hillside Tavern is always fun, and we usually take our out of town friends there to enjoy an evening. Dallas is very lucky to have lots of great museums conveniently close to Klyde Warren Park where we could grab some grub from local food trucks. If you can’t tell, we love sunshine and food so if you hang with us you better be hungry!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I wouldn’t be able to make Sandcastle a reality without my spouse and business partner Cass. I am a dreamer and she keeps me grounded in reality. My language is creativity and Cass is the translator. She not only gives me the encouragement to keep going but helps me bring ideas to life so that everyone can enjoy it.

Without her Sandcastle would still be in a drawer in my workstation. She also takes care of most of the business side of our operation. Cass keeps the train on the tracks so that I am free to create and free to use my imagination to it’s fullest.

We also owe so much to Good Local Markets in Dallas. The community we have at the Farmer’s Market has been a huge blessing in more ways than one. Not only is it a great space to sell our products, but the connections we have made with local farmers has allowed us to expand our product line through our Market Mixes program. With our Market Mixes we buy produce from local farmers and use it in our seasonings, especially if the farmer’s were not able to sell it at the market. It’s great because it cuts down on food waste, puts dollars in farmer’s pockets, and I get to flex my creative muscle and decide what we will do with it. Some of our best products are the result of this process! Without the local farmers, Market Mixes wouldn’t and can’t exist.
