We had the good fortune of connecting with Mike McKenna and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mike, what’s one piece of conventional advice that you disagree with?
To start, I disagree that advice should be conventional.  The best advice should reflect the needs of the recipient not the vanity or lack of creativity of the advice-giver.  Useful advice is customized, not sanitized.  For example, children are expected to follow the rules of ‘conventional wisdom’ (the supposed foundation of advice), but then – unsurprisingly – they’re ill-equipped to imaginatively solve problems or easily embrace innovation as they mature.  Then, as adults, we’re expected to abide by the convention of ‘following the leader’, but most folks never learn what constitutes good leadership.  As a result, not enough people know how to recognize a leader nor how to become one themselves.  Overall, conventional wisdom is not wrong, it has just gained more of a stronghold in how we should live than it deserves.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
TEAM Solutions is a bespoke consultancy for emerging crisis leaders.  Historically, most of my work has been in-person but since 2011, I’ve also served clients successfully online via self-managed educational programs and video interactions.  Other leadership trainers and advisors out there treat leadership as a transactional, soft-skill, i.e. “be a courageous decision-maker’ or other meaningless bromides.  My services are transformational and therefore much more relevant for overcoming today’s challenges.  My clients expect and receive measurable improvements in their knowledge and skill for their immediate use in a variety of conditions.  And because my clients are equipped to lead themselves and their organization during a crisis, they’re also able to confidently lead in any other condition, too.  Everybody wins.  Learn more here:  TEAM-Solutions.US

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If a friend who’d never been to DFW came for a week … my objective would be to offer them experiences they won’t easily find elsewhere, starting with relaxing with some whiskey, music and conversation on my back patio.  We’d go for a hike at Rockledge Park on Lake Grapevine and if it were around Christmas-time, we’d stop at the Gaylord Texan to see their atrium decorations.  If we dined out, we’d go to Esperanza’s Cafe & Bakery in Fort Worth (same owners as world-famous Joe T. Garcias, but not as busy) for local Tex-Mex.  For entertainment, a show at Bass Hall in downtown Ft. Worth.  Of course, we’d also end up visiting at least one soccer field somewhere, like MoneyGram Soccer Park near Walnut Hill and I-35 to watch my son compete.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Fantastic question.  I bristle at the term ‘self-made’ because really, everyone has benefited from others in their journey.  That’s especially true when someone is successful.  My list of influences is long and notable.  On a daily basis, my family fuels my reason why I do what I do.  Professionally, I’d like to shoutout to those leaders who have demonstrated their authenticity, kindness and mentorship.
