We had the good fortune of connecting with Megan David and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Megan, how do you think about risk?
I’ve never considered myself a person who takes risks; however, if you want to really go for what you want in life, you HAVE to take risks. No risk, no reward… it’s a cliche but it’s true. Prior to venturing out on my own, I assessed the risks and evaluated the pros and cons of staying as an employee at a great law firm, or doing my own thing. I realized that there really isn’t much downside to starting my own firm as far as risks are concerned. If I failed, I’m still a licensed lawyer and I can go work for a firm. If I succeeded, then I have the opportunity to be my own boss, have more freedom with my schedule, and do things my way. Once you accept that owning a business is going to be very hard, you’re able to focus on all the positives that will come. Plus, if it were easy, everyone would do it.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I founded MD Law, PLLC in the summer of 2017 after practicing law for 9 years. At that point, I was ready to make the scary leap and start my own firm. Taking the first step is usually the hardest part – I’m most proud of that. We all say “one day,” and then we don’t make it happen. If you really want something, DO IT!
The first couple years were full of long hours, stress, eye rolling, and many deep breaths. But I was hyper-focused and now it’s less hours and more confidence. I’m where I am now because of drive, consistency, and perseverance. The good days are easy, and the easy days are good… but if you can’t push through the hard days, where does that leave you? Whether you want to be a fantastic parent, an Oscar winning actor, a gold medalist, or a successful lawyer, you push through the many obstacles because you know it will be worth it. You cut out distractions because your long-term life goals outweigh the importance of short-term gratification.
Along the way I’ve learned many things. 1) There is no substitute for experience. The more you do something, the better you will be and the more confident as well. 2) We all spend a good portion of our lives working… ya better find and do something you like and enjoy. 3) Take care of yourself… no one else will. Your career isn’t more important than your mental or physical health. Some people realize this only once it’s too late. I’ve learned to stop and smell the proverbial roses…. mmmmm. I’ve also taken about 8 vacations in the last two years, whereas in the first 13 years of practice I took 2 vacations. Life is short… take the vacation and your work will be waiting for you upon your return.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Dallas is a great city and has so much to offer. I’m a fan of delicious restaurants and I love trying new spots. Addison is a suburb of Dallas with fantastic places to eat and drink. Dallas also has the Mavs, Cowboys, Stars, FC Dallas, and the World Series champions, the Texas Rangers! I go to games whenever I can. There’s also a slew of museums, although if you’re well-traveled they’re nothing like the museums elsewhere. If the weather is nice, there’s Klyde Warren Park that has ping pong, ice cream, food trucks, and other fun attractions. There’s no shortage of 5-star steak and seafood restaurants with a to-die-for martini. Staying in for a game night with friends is a great time. I’m also a fan of the Arboretum. And if it’s September, why of course you gotta check out the TX State Fair, which is right here in Dallas.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Where do I even start? Well, I’m not one of those people who could ever say “I want to be successful to prove people wrong.” I had healthy dose of encouragement and support from both of my parents, relatives, friends, teachers, and coaches my entire life. Guidance, advice, and wisdom were shared on a regular basis from all of the above. I heard “You can do anything you want to do” more times than I can count. And if you hear something enough, you’re bound to believe it at some point. There are also many very experienced lawyers that have been there for me throughout my career to lend an ear or help me strategize on a case.
