Meet Meg Hetherington | Owner of Get Baked Wylie

We had the good fortune of connecting with Meg Hetherington and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Meg, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
I have always loved baking, even as a little kid in my grandmother’s and mother’s kitchens. When I became a mom, making my kids birthday cakes was very important to me. Over the years, friends began asking me to bake for them and lots of people told me I should start a bakery. I started Get Baked Wylie as a side business in late 2019 and have been so lucky to be able to do it full time since I stopped teaching in 2022.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My medium is sugar. Being creative is one of the most exciting parts of my career! I love helping people make their special occasions even more special with a fantastic dessert. The most challenging aspect of my job is trying to make a customer’s vision come to life, while still ensuring the dessert tastes amazing. And, as a cottage food bakery, I have limitations on what I can provide. For example, I can only sell cakes that do not require refrigeration. Sometimes clients want something like whipped cream, and then we have to come up with alternative options. I am fortunate to have very understanding clients who are willing to work with me and trust me with their special events.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love living in Wylie, Texas! We have great places to visit and fun things to do both here in Wylie and in the surrounding areas. Ballard Street in Wylie has that small town Main Street feel with fun restaurants, places to shop, coffee shops to hang out at, and a family park at the end of the street! There are tons of fun events there like Boo on Ballard in October and the Bluegrass Festival in Summer. Venturing out of Wylie, we are not far from Dallas where you can go to the Arboretum and see the beautiful gardens or visit the Dallas Zoo.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My Shoutout definitely goes straight to my husband, Brett, and my amazing kids, Nikki and Nate. They are my biggest cheerleaders and support me with my business 100 percent. They are also my honest taste testers and stay out of my way when I’m taking over our kitchen with orders! My son makes my cookie cutters for me with his 3D printer and my daughter helps with my social media. I’m one lucky mama!
