We had the good fortune of connecting with Maya Jackson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Maya, can you share a quote or affirmation with us?
The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz live at the tippy top of my mind on a daily basis.

They are: be impeccable with your word, don’t take anything personally, don’t make assumptions and always do your best.

Simple, but they are the blueprint for and how I approach work and decision making each and every day.

The book and its expression of these agreements helped me to understand myself in relation to others, in love, and to understand the dynamics of how I move on a spiritual and emotional level. Any working professional knows the roller coaster of emotions, personalities and situations that you can encounter on a weekly basis so these affirmations ground me – they keep my head clear and my heart open!

Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
To keep it simple – my journey is ever evolving. I am proud of everything that I do, down to the littlest things. I don’t ever have moments where one accomplishment truly outshines the other because there’s always greater, always more to ascend to – so I celebrate it all. Surrendering to the process and understanding what it will take to achieve is what makes this worthwhile!

In addition I would say to never stop learning. Never stop, and once you THINK that you made it, find ways to challenge yourself even more. Life in my eyes is about seeing how high you can go until your time here is up. and I’m aiming beyond the stars.

The only difference between myself and someone who is still figuring it out (and honestly, I’m still figuring it all out too) is just action, faith and believing. Like Nike says, just do it, and be consistent. I think that’s one of the things that stems from why I started my business to begin with, which was to give people that extra push. I help people to see “it”, feel “it” and experience their brand, or creative vision for everything that it is so that they know that from there there are no limits.

A quote that I use with my clients says “A brand is a canvas and your heart is the paint. My hands are the brushes, but only you can create.” You are the master of your dreams, your ideas and visions – I’m just here to help, and I believe in them because you do! That’s what Esque Creative is about.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
All time favorite spot to go is Cidercade. It’s an adult arcade that serves cider beverages, so drinking and video games – what more can you ask for. There’s usually some kind of food truck parked in the front too so that’s always a plus.

From there I would visit around the Bishop Arts and Deep Ellum area, find some dope murals to photo bomb and indulge in a Sunday Funday somewhere!

Alright, so let’s jump right in! The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there a person, group, organization, book, etc. that you want to dedicate your shoutout to? Who else deserves a little credit and recognition in your story?
I have to give a HUGE shoutout to my alma mater, Langston University.

It’s a beautiful Historically Black College located in Langston, Oklahoma. I cannot even measure the amount of love, opportunities and experiences that school has granted me – priceless.

Langston is where I learned to be a leader. It is where I learned to turn little into extraordinary. It is where I turned failure into fortitude. There, I came into my identity as a black woman who realized that she stands on the shoulders of giants.

Every person on that campus pushed me to succeed. They challenged me and empowered me all the way up until the last day I set foot on the yard. The culture, the family, the history and the love deserves so much credit into helping shape me into who I am today.
