We had the good fortune of connecting with Madylan Taylor Edge and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Madylan Taylor, other than deciding to work for yourself, what else do you think played a pivotal role in your story?
Finding confidence in myself.

This is the cornerstone of success for any scale designer and business owner. Believing in your creative vision and professional abilities not only fuels your passion, but also instills trust from your clients. As a residential designer, confidence allows you to push boundaries, experiments with innovative ideas, and deliver exceptional results tailored to your clients’ needs. As a business owner, confidence empowers you to make bold decisions, navigate challenges with resilience, and effectively market your services. Having confidence and trust in yourself leads to fruitful collaborations with clients and long-term success in the competitive design industry.

Despite the number of supporters you have in your corner, the ultimate authority over your power and confidence lies within you.

My little secret to success; there’s times where faking the confidence you need also helps to foster it.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Design is a challenging profession to get into. You’re being trusted with one of the most expensive and sensitive finical investment that most people will make in their entire lives. Emotions are high and the final results are extensively researched and discussed throughout. With that said, I’m most proud of my process. I get to know clients as personally as I can in a short period of time. I want to bring out the best in your home, bringing unique designs and taking risks appropriately per each client. Truly listening to the feedback and understanding the comfortability of the client, while bringing them results they could have never executed themselves is a rewarding process.

The industry is all about referrals and client testimonials. This is how I continue to get clients and large-scale projects. Most of these projects take on a life span of 1-2 years and can present many challenges throughout the phases of design and build. If someone trusts in both you and your work on both a professional and creative level, that’s one hell of a referral.

A major lesson that I continue to learn and adapt to is the balance of the internet as a recourse and an enemy. The concept of elements being “in” or “out” is a constant battle. Helping people find their own personal branding in a culture of immediacy and a revolving door of trends, can be a difficult task. You want to balance inspiration, but also expectations that the industry online moves much faster than your build/renovation. I understand the fear behind making these future choices for your own home for potentially a year from now, when things change every day. A good designer helps not only design and manage your build, but also finds your confidence in YOU. This is your home, let’s find what makes you truly happy in both taking a bit of a risk – with timelessness in mind.

I’m in this industry not only because I love what I do, but also for what it represents. By investing in high-end design, individuals not only enhance their living spaces but also elevate their overall quality of life, enjoying unparalleled comfort, sophistication, and beauty every day. The built environment is so important to how we feel and enjoy life. I want people to know that I support this truth at any scale and believe we hold a lot of power in how we feel through the environments we choose to create.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to shoutout my dad.

I started this dream at a young age and he had more confidence in me than I do, even today. He’s been my biggest advocate and supporter since the start of this journey. With taking risks comes a lot of (loving) criticism and doubt from family and friends. Yet, there hasn’t been a crack of negativity displayed from him. My dad is the unwavering source of inspiration and guidance, whose exuberant spirit has inspired my path towards starting my own business.

When taking such a leap of faith on myself, he’s been there to keep encouraging me forward. Without the help and enthusiasm my dad has expressed from the very beginning, I have him to thank for many immeasurable reasons.
