We had the good fortune of connecting with Lily Ha and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lily, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?

Starting my own business has been a goal of mine since I started graduate school. During my graduate program, I was able to train at a professor’s private practice, which really inspired me to pursue my dream of opening up my own practice. At that time, I also met several other clinicians operating successful practices, which gave me even more confidence that this is something I could and wanted to do too.

After I completed my graduate program and relocated back to Dallas, the dream of starting my business became more real, and I was willing to do everything I could to make my dream become a reality. Before making my dream a reality, I thought it was important to have more experience. Specifically, I wanted to gain more clinical and administrative experience so I wouldn’t be walking in blind as a business owner. So, I joined a group practice in 2017 and spent six years there. Over those six years, I feel like I grew immensely as a professional. Not only was I able to strengthen my clinical and administrative skills, my confidence grew two fold, which motivated me to take the leap this year and I opened my business.  I was humbled when I found out that all clients wanted to follow and support me to my new office. I believe it is a testament to the strong relationships I was able to build with my clients and the trust they have in my expertise.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?

I currently run a counseling private practice located in Allen, Texas. I offer both in-person and virtual services. Offering virtual services gives clients the flexibility they need, especially during these challenging times. I am EMDR certified and focus on providing trauma-focused services. EMDR (eye movement desensitization reprocessing) therapy is a research, evidence based therapy.  It is a highly sought out form of therapy and something valuable I can offer to clients. I also offer evening appointments for clients, which allows them to be seen after work hours.

Opening a counseling practice came with technical challenges and things that were not taught during graduate school. I was blessed to have mentors and colleagues who provided guidance and support while I was preparing everything to open my business. I believe the support I received and the strong professional connections I had with colleagues were crucial in me successfully stepping out on my own.

As an established professional and business owner, my commitment to serving my clients is the most important. I hope to continue to serve my clients, provide quality services, and destigmatize mental health, particularly within the Asian community, and contribute to a more inclusive and supportive environment for all seeking out mental health services.

At my practice, my goal is to help clients blossom into the best versions of themselves, and I am truly dedicated to their growth and well-being. I am very passionate about my work and committed to making a positive impact on the lives of others.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.

There are so many options and places to explore in the growing DFW area now. From brunch in Plano, to walking around The Star in Frisco, and exploring various neighborhoods in Dallas, I would definitely try my best to show treat my best friend a good time. Starting in Plano, I would take them to Haywire, which is known as a great spot for brunch. We would definitely order the appetizer – coffee cake in a can – which the texture and taste are to die for! After indulging in a brunch, we would walk around the Shops of Legacy, check out the Food Hall, and check out the different shops.

The next day, I would plan for us to head over to Frisco to make sure they see The Star and all that is has to offer now, including the Dallas Cowboys practice facility. For a satisfying lunch, we would enjoy a meal and mimosas at Tupelo Honey Southern Kitchen and Bar. Afterwards, we would swing by Sidecar Social to enjoy music and drink. Afterwards, we would head to central Frisco and explore the Asian strip, where we could do a little shopping at Ranch 99 and get a refreshing boba drinks at 7 Leaves.

After spending some time in the suburbs, we would definitely spend a few days in Dallas itself. We would start by visiting the Dallas Arboretum, which now is the best time to visit with their beautiful seasonal decorations. Then, we would check out Lower Greenville and explore its dive bars and eateries. A whole day would be devoted to Downtown Dallas itself. I would make sure we stop by Happiest Hour for food and drinks where we can enjoy breathtaking views of the city, walk by the American Airlines Center, and then plan for a tour at the Sixth Floor Museum. Another day, I would take my friend to the charming Bishop Arts District, known for its unique atmosphere and boutique shops. We would enjoy appetizers and drinks at Paradiso, and then head to Lucia for a memorable dinner experience.

Lastly, iIf my best friend was up for some outdoor fun, I would take us to check out some local pickleball leagues in the DFW area. It would be a great way to have fun and meet fellow pickleball enthusiasts. With so much to see and do, I hope my best friend would have a memorable time exploring the vibrant and rapidly growing DFW area.
