We had the good fortune of connecting with Krishna Upadhyaya and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Krishna, what’s one piece of conventional advice that you disagree with?
Keep Business Hours of 9-5. This advice I disagree with especially if you are service not retail. I don’t remember a time when I didnt answer my phone after 5pm. The clients expect answers immediately. Of course, you need to keep your priorities in mind when owning a business. However, often owners loose business because they don’t answer their phone. A simple task yet not many business owners follow it. Answer your phone and you will get business!
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
With over 18 years of real estate experience already sets me apart from others. Being in one area for 40 years says I have market area competence. Being a real estate agent is easy, your relationship with the client is short. However with property management its more of an endearing relationship with several players. When I envision myself – I see a clown juggling 5 balls at once. I have to keep a happy face and keep everyone else happy! No it was not easy, all my life I avoided confrontation because of my upbringing. Owning a business forces you to be somewhat confrontational and develop a thick skin. It took me a while to develop the skill. I want the world to know that being a minority female does not have limitations. We create our own obstacles and limitations. We can overcome them with time, persistence and self-love!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Actually everything would be in lower Greenville, Bishop Arts District or Deep Ellum. These are iconic historic areas of Dallas with lots of culture.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
This is easy, my husband! He has been extremely supportive of my business pursuit. He not only supports me but also provides mentoring. Business and bookkeeping does not come naturally to me, like it does for my husband. He explains why its important to keep track of all the expenses! He takes care of all the back end of our business. When I have to talk to clients in the evening, he will manage the kids. He understands that owning a business also effects our family life and I cant always do everything. He will take over when I need another hand. I know when one partner is not supportive of the other partner’s work it can take a toll on the relationship and family. Owning a business is already stressful, adding more stress just complicates everything and takes the joy out of everything!
