We had the good fortune of connecting with Kaycee Le’l and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kaycee, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
Work life balance….this is the story of my life. I’m actually still trying to figure this one out. I hear all the time from family and friends that I work too much. I literally can’t help myself. I love to stay busy and I love what I do. It can be very difficult. I do have to make time for my family and other things I want to do. To be honest, I live by my planner-my old school pen and paper. I truly keeps my life in order. I know this is something I’m continuing to work on.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am what you would call “old school” when it comes to the beauty industry. I say this because I have been in this business for over twenty years and I did not build my business via social media. I have built and continue to build my business through word of mouth. My clients refer me to their friends, family, or just someone they may come across while out. My clients are my walking billboards. Because we live in a social media world today, I believe this sets me apart from others. Although I do believe social media is an awesome platform, referrals have been best for me in building my clientele and I believe it creates a more loyal client.
I also feel like what sets me apart from others is my sense of customer service and transparency. When it comes to my business I am a stickler for time. I give my clients a one on one salon experience. I do not schedule multiple clients at one time. Their time is their time and I believe both the client and I can appreciate that, I have some clients use that time as their “getaway” and it’s their time to relax. Because I am a Cosmetology Teacher at a local high school in addition to owning a salon, I am always educating my clients and being very open and honest with them when it comes to their hair and scalp. There may be times a clients asks for something that I may feel just isn’t the best thing for them and their hair. I will be very honest with them in explaining why and I know it’s appreciated.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Anyone who knows me knows I am a lover of all things food and all things music. When I can have a combination of the two at once, I am all smiles. I’d have to say at this time, Kitchen & Kocktails Downtown Dallas would have to be one of my go to spots right now. Although I’m not really big on the adult beverages, I must admit that Kitchen & Kocktails does have some wonderful cocktails. They also have amazing food and the dj is amazing. To make things even better, this is a black owned establishment and I’m all about supporting our black owned businesses. Live music is a favorite of mine so I would definitely love to hit up a concert on a perfect evening. I’m pretty simple. I just like to hang with loved ones and have a good meal.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are three people specifically I would like to “Shoutout” that have truly helped me in this entrepreneurial journey. Shoutout to my mother who has truly been my number one supporter in all that I have done and continue to do. She has literally been there to support me through it all. I appreciate her more than she’ll ever know. Joey B is one I will always be grateful for so I’d like to “Shoutout” him. Joey was one of the first hair stylists I worked under as an apprentice and I’ve learned so much from. It was over 20 years ago that I first worked with him yet everything he has taught me is still right here inside of me. I will forever thank Joey! Last but not least, I’d like to “Shoutout” my daughter-Mykal Le’l. She truly is my why. She is my reason for it all. Mykal has been the most amazing child a parent could ever ask for. I am so thankful for her patience over the years as this beauty industry has kept us very busy and not so structured at times. Mykal has been my rock over the years and I am so thankful to be her Mommy.
