We had the good fortune of connecting with Katy Pickens and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Katy, can you share the most important lesson you’ve learned over the course of your career?
I would say that I don’t have to have everything figured out. I feel a pressure to know and, honestly, I don’t. That is ok. I can ask questions or seek out someone who does know. I can find others who excel in skills that I lack. It’s ok to not have all the answers and to not let this obstacle stop me. I’ve learned to simply try, embrace the success, and learn from the failure.

What should our readers know about your business?

As things have grown, I begin to only see cookies. What’s so special about a cookie? Even if it’s decorated pretty? However, I am reminded someone has invited me into their celebrations! These cookies help them celebrate birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, babies, and holidays to name a few. The excitement my customers have to gift my cookies is truly an honor.

I could decorate a cookie but I had no idea how to run a business. I never saw myself doing anything similar to running a business. Still is hard to say into words that I do. This has been my biggest challenge. Learning what is profitable, what legally is required, and pricing have been my biggest hurdles. I remind myself I can do this.

Plus, I think my cookies taste delicious!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I live in a growing suburb to the east of Dallas called Fate. We would visit downtown. Breakfast would be at the food truck yard grabbing coffee at Rollin’ Beans and breakfast at Shayna’s. Dinner would be at Pablo’s Cantina because of the amazing food and fun atmosphere followed by an ice cream dessert at It’s Fate Creamery next door. Our biggest new attraction is the second Brookshire’s Fresh in the country. We love this claim to fame! Live music at night and a playground for my kiddos to play on is a win win!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First and foremost, my husband, Mark. Not only has our house become consumed with cookies, decorating tools, and trays (to name a few), he has supported me from the beginning. He has been 100% all in for this endeavor and I can’t express how much confidence this has given me to pursue this business.

Also, my dear friend, Megan. She has listened to every fear I have had with each and every step whether big or small. She has been there from the beginning and encouraged me to just do it!
