We had the good fortune of connecting with Katie Sanders and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Katie, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
Without risk taking I would not be moving forward in my career or my life. Without risks for me would have been compliance and that is not my personality. Risks I have taken such as starting my career over in a different state, to opening my own practice, even to my family life there are challenges however the reward and feeling of accomplishment has been unbelievable.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am proud to say that I love being a therapist everyday! I love going to my office, I like that each day brings new challenges and at the end of the day no matter how challenging I look forward to coming back the next day. My first passion in counseling is with couples or those struggling in relationships. There’s a joy in watching couples rediscover their relationship, passion, and learn new skills to move forward. I do work with high conflict families and those in transition to divorce/separation, co parenting, parent/child struggles. These families offer their own challenges however when they learn to work together, or focus on the best interest of their children it is very rewarding to be a part of. In growing my practice I have learned it is most important to have a solid group of therapist/professionals to consult with. Having consultation groups allows continued learning from other professionals and in this career there is always something new to learn.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well I think it’s very different now when my best friend visits then when we were in college together. Now we love just sitting by the pool with a drink and watching the kids swim. Though Dallas has so much to offer if I have a week off with my best friend we aren’t staying in either city we are from. We are off to wine country or big cities to explore museums, music, food, or any attraction we find amusing and you can bet we are staying somewhere with a pool or body of water so we can relax, read and catch up.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The biggest shout out would absolutely go to my husband, John. John made it through all my education, internship, and has supported me in every aspect of growth in my career and as a mother. My kids definitely push me to be better. I want to them to see that there can be a balance in a career I love along with never putting them second, my family always comes first. The therapists of Empowered Counseling where I office my practice. They are such a solid group of therapists and gave me space to become a stronger more confident therapist.
