We had the good fortune of connecting with Katelynn Summers and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Katelynn, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Most of my work life prior to starting my small business had consisted of me having multiple jobs at a time, constantly on my feet for up to 16 hours a day, 7 days a week. I was just trying to pay bills and stay busy making money. As you can imagine, it was nothing short of being mentally and physically exhausted all the time. Only a couple of months after graduating high school, I attended the Aveda Institute of Arts and Sciences in Dallas, TX for their Cosmetology program. While I enjoyed my time exploring each opportunity and learning during my time there, my future within the industry was unforeseen. The beauty industry tells you not to chase your dreams. Go work for somebody else’s. I had dirty towels thrown on me and was told to clean toilets while working in an established salon as a young stylist. All I wanted to do was further my knowledge within my craft, and become a better artist.
The day I took my final exam and received my cosmetology license, I lost someone I hold close to my heart. I was at the airport, heading to the funeral when I saw an ad on my phone for salon suites opening. The day I got back home I was in contact with an owner and touring a space. That space I’ve called home to my lil business for 5 years now. The thing is, life is just too short to work on some else’s dreams. I quit listening to everyone else, and all the doubt, and I did the big scary thing. Best decision I ever made.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I think by the time I could walk I could draw on paper. I’ve always been an artist, it’s in my blood. Throughout the years, I’ve kind of become a jack of all trades within the arts industry. I’ve dabbled in everything; From web & graphic design to realism paintings, and some photography. I’m currently in love with crocheting, and have even been able to make some extra money with that. In high school I fell deeply in love with the art of cosmetics. I dabbled in Special FX makeup, and even taught a few seminars. By the time I was 15, I began a freelance business doing makeup & up-dos for bridals and events. Once I turned 16 and got my own wheels, that’s when my freelance business took off. I was working shows, weddings, and even got to work with some professional brands as a makeup artist. Going to cosmetology school was when I shifted my interest to focus on doing hair. In grade school I was invested in the world of science and chemistry, which plays a huge role in my understanding of hair and how it works. My job is basically a combination of all the things I love to learn about. I now specialize in Color Theory through doing hair, which carries a lot of inspiration from my previous creative hobbies. To me, hair is just another type of canvas.

Recently while I was doing a clients hair, she told me: ‘Every time I leave here, I feel so inspired. You just radiate creativity.’ …And that is why I do what I do. I am so passionate about my art & so thankful every day this is what I get to wake up and do.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well, we would have to feed my love for antique and thrift shopping, so I’d have to go through my list of flea markets/antique malls to visit, but of course not without stopping for an iced coffee or crisp soda to get our energy goin. Later, lunch some place I could get a really good sandwich. We could check out what concerts/performances are going to be happening, and get Whataburger breakfast on the way home from the show. Checking out a hockey or baseball game with my dad is always fun, and getting barbecue is a MUST.
I am honestly a homebody, so I find most of my comfort is at home with my fur babies. My husband and I have 3 precious boys, 2 cats and a Boxer. They take up a good chunk of my time as you can imagine. But while at home, we can play Overwatch, Minecraft, Fortnite (and a whole lot of other games) on one of our gaming consoles or PC’s, or I can call some other friends over for a long night of Rummikub and Monopoly. If that doesn’t keep us busy, I have just about every arts & crafts project you’d want to work on available. With the small chance I’m missing something, we could go to a craft store (because I could spend hours there). And when you get hungry, I’d probably enjoy cooking you dinner of your choice, as long as its not seafood<3.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My mom-
Since I was a little girl I wanted to make people feel beautiful. I never wanted to go to college, I stopped caring so much about test scores and GPA in grade school, because I knew my path was unlike others. Never once did she discourage my creativity & ideas. Never once has she failed to show up for me. My mom has been nothing short of supportive in every way imaginable, and I am eternally grateful to her.

My husband, Ryan-
The person I come home to. My breath of fresh air. This man goes to the end of the earth to tell people how amazing he thinks I am, and never fails to let me know how much I am loved. He encourages me to be my best self, and holds my hand when I’m not. I am so lucky.

My sissy-
My best friend. My heart and soul. She is the person who makes me ugly laugh, and cry. The one I can tell anything to. Words don’t need to be said for us to understand each other. She doesn’t know all the ways she’s saved me. Being her big sister has been the biggest blessing in this life.

…And to those who continue to show up for me, I am thankful everyday for you.
