We had the good fortune of connecting with Bettye Stalder and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Bettye, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I have wanted to own my own boutique for years, but when we started to have children my husband and I both decided it would be amazing for me to be a stay at home mom. We have two beautiful girls, and we were waiting for them to get a little older for me to pursue my dream of owning my own business when… surprise! We found out we were pregnant with our third, our baby boy. It was a hard decision at that point to decide if I was going to continue to be a stay at home mom for a few years with him, or continue with our plan of me opening the baby and children’s boutique. After several months and lots of conversation we decided to just go for it and take the baby along for the ride! When talking about starting our own business we knew it would be a lot of work, and long hours, especially on the front in. But the long term benefits outweighed any hesitations or fears we had. The opportunity to be able to raise our children in our own store, helping and working along side of us was something we didn’t want to pass up. There is a LOT of work that goes into owning your own business, but a lot of flexibility as well. Not many people have a job they can bring their kids to, and our girls are already loving the whole process of getting the store open up!

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Southern Stork Baby and Children’s Boutique is a high-end baby and children’s store that sells clothes, shoes, and accessories, as well as anything you can think of needing for a baby! This includes blankets, towels, washes, bib, burp clothes, and MANY other baby related items. Baby and children’s boutiques are hard to find in the Plano area, and we are very proud and fortunate to be able to open one. From the brands we carry, to our beautiful store front, we are the only one of our kind in our area! Children are such an amazing blessing and we are incredibly excited to be able to help our families in our community celebrate the greatest gift of all, the gift of life!
For the last 5 years I have been a stay-at-home mom to our beautiful girls, so the idea of opening a baby and children’s boutique was very exciting because we were in the season of all things baby! We were waiting for our daughters to get older to open the store, when we found out we were pregnant with our third, our baby boy. We then had to decide if I was going to continue to stay home with him, and push the opening of the boutique a few years, or just go for it and take him along for the ride! The timing of when to open the store has been very difficult and finally came down to a leap of faith (we went with the decision to take the baby along for the ride with us!). My husband and I have really leaned in to our faith and dependence on God to get us through the change of schedules and routines, as well as financially investing in our dream. We realized that no matter how much planning you do, you finally just have to jump! We had been talking about it for years, making business plans, reading all of the books, but at the end of the day we realized, are we going to go for it or not? One lesson we have learned through this whole process is don’t be afraid to ask for help. If you have a good support system, lean into them! From advice from fellow business owners, to family helping with our children, we have had SO much love and support from those around us which has made the whole process of opening a business so much easier and fun. At the end of of the day, we are just a family of 5 who are chasing their dreams! We can’t wait to see where the next 10 years takes us!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Some of our favorite places to eat in the Dallas area are Al Biernat’s, Uchi, Hudson House, and some good Mesero Mexican food! It’s always fun to walk around the shops at Highland Park Village. Whether or not you are in the mood to spend some money or not, it’s beautiful if you can make it before the summer heat hits! We love walking the Legacy shopping area, (and they have a Mesero!) there are so many great shops and we love that it’s outdoor. One of our favorite things to do is venture over to Fort Worth, stay at the Drover, and hit the shops at Clearfork. If you make it out that way you have to stop for some Curly’s Ice cream and the Bluebonnet Bakery is a MUST! For some local boutique shopping, I personally think downtown McKinney does it best! There are SO many great places to shop and it’s a beautiful Texas downtown.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I absolutely want to dedicate my shoutout to my husband, Andrew Stalder. Without him there is no way I could pursue this dream, especially in this season that we are in with small children! He has given me so much support throughout this start-up faze and is truly the other half to this business. He not only has encouraged me, but has taken on so many aspects of the business (from accounting to embroidery) to fully set us up for success. He has also been incredibly supportive as I have made the difficult switch from a stay-at-home mom to working full time. Southern Stork would not exist without him!
