We had the good fortune of connecting with Kassandra Ayala and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kassandra, what principle do you value most?
I don’t know if I value balance most of all but it’s one of the values I have readily hung on the coat rack of my mind. It’s there for me right before I walk out the door and the first thing I see when I come back home…. am I balanced? For me, finding balance in all aspects of life is “knowing when”. Feeling when to take a break from work to do something lighthearted, eating less meat, more vegetables, taking some hermit time for yourself/skipping the social thing is OK. When there’s balance you feel right. More love and time for you to share with loved ones and work on ideas. amen. huzzah.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
what I’m most excited about is to come up with more songs, arrange them, and record them. I love that each song has their little moods. after the songs have been written, I love the process of bringing in my cabinet. each musician in the cabinet has their wonderful world that they’ll use to add to the song. it’s magic! I love to sing with the band and channel the other world. and no, it’s not easy sometimes when I am writing or maybe most times! haha. perfectionism is a thing! or maybe not perfectionism, it’s more I want things to be a certain way or how I see them/hear them in my head. I don’t like perfect things, no. But I have a hard time letting things go in life, sure. music and the musicians have been teaching me though. I see them and they’re so fluid and flexible. when playing live for example, they know how to save the performance or how to make it ok if something goes wrong. it’s beautiful. I can’t wait to learn more!
I am currently recording my first EP and eager to birth soon! look for it around mid-late June 2021, I’d appreciate it, hope it resonates with you.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
if my best friends were in town we’d go to enchanted rock. maybe a chocolate milkshake! ooh! the guayaba ice cream at SA Pops is good!! we like Brackenridge park it’s easy to channel Kate Bush there. people watching in downtown San Antonio also a thing we’d do. mall of the americas so weird, love it. movie at the bijou. before ‘rona we were at the friendly spot often. we like to look around in antique shops. also, drive around Diggy hill looking for some guy that waved to us once a zillion years ago. we still haven’t found him ’till this day! the lonesome rose is cool in SA for an evening hang.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
omg I want to shoutout my kindergarten bilingual teacher Mrs. Islas (wherever she is) who was the first “of the Arts” person I ever saw. I remember her having the biggest heart and this compassion so true. I want to grow to be just like her.
My HS art teacher Miss Bishop too! who encouraged me to sing in art class (because art and music go together at second Saturdays). my Abue, she was the first singing voice I ever heard. my ‘ma! for giving me life and love. my sister, the boy y primas. my casa-chicas for being with me through the times. my dad for changing my guitar strings.
my musical cabinet: producer/collaborator/guitarist, Nemo! @jujulians- my favorite drummer in the world!
Daniel Miller-jazz guitarist/fiddle plays beautifully knows so much! + joyous vibes are contagious.
Jorge Vargas- country/jazz guitarist/bass- beautifully too, i love his ideas! Armando Jasso- my favorite trumpet player in the world! Miguel Hernandez- artist/collaborator I love to scheme with!!
