We had the good fortune of connecting with Jodi Gibbs and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jodi, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I had just been laid off from my corporate job of nearly 22 years and was a bit lost trying to find another job. I was talking with my niece who had started a balloon business in Amarillo about a year prior and she talked me through how to get started and a few tips & tricks. Silly as it may sound balloons have always made me happy – growing up my Mom & her sister used to send each other balloon bouquets for birthdays and holidays. I wanted to be around happy people or make people happy – balloons it is! Balloons make people smile! Spodz Balloons (pronounced with a long “O”) is my high school nickname and I’d always said that one day I would start my own business and use Spodz as the name.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I have been working in the customer service oriented business since I was very young. I grew up with my parents owning their own business so summers I would work with my Dad. He taught me a very strong work ethic that I am proud of. I am a 30+ year retail veteran that has enabled me to travel around the world, learn key lessons in business and personally. It wasn’t always easy but the hard work, dedication and strong work ethic that I learned young paid off. Today I continue my retail career here in Dallas as Director of Merchandising at Sharon Young Inc., own my own business, I’m a wife married 22 years and a mom of two daughters soon both to be in college. It’s challenging juggling everything while trying to have that work life balance we all strive for but, I am proud of what I’ve accomplished so far and hope that I’ve been an example to my daughters. I’ve had Spodz Balloons for nearly 3 years now – the best is having clients call you back for another event! That is my greatest compliment – knowing that they were so happy with their balloons that they trust me again!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
A week with my best friend would be amazing! We would for sure spend a relaxing day shopping around downtown McKinney – I love the shops there. We would eat at The Yard outside and then get ice cream from Cocktail Creamery! It’s delicious if you’ve not tried it yet!
We would have to get delicious TX BBQ at Hutchins at some point – my husband also smokes a mean brisket! We call his Gibber’s BBQ (maybe one day he’ll have his own restaurant).
A visit to TX wouldn’t be complete with out my favorite Mexican Mi Dia’s in Plano with a Paloma!
Shopping at North Park mall is a must too!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My husband, Neal has always been my number 1 supporter and encourager. When I talked about the idea of starting a balloon business he was all in helping me brainstorm on all the things I needed to explore when starting out. What he didn’t realize at the time (along with my two daughters) is that this really is a family business. They are awesome at helping me whenever I need with anything from inflating balloons, load them up for delivery, caravan to deliver the larger jobs, helping to install and my extra set of eyes to see where something is missing! They are awesome and I couldn’t do this without them!
