We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessica VanLaningham and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jessica, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
SEO is a tough industry – there are a lot of “Do these three things and you’ll see your online traffic grow overnight” type of providers. This is something we constantly have to defend against. Search Engine Optimization is a long-term growth game. I think outsiders a lot of times think Internet marketing is smoke and mirrors — and with many providers, it is! These days we have so many tools to enhance transparency, there is no reason you shouldn’t know exactly what you’re paying for and what you’ll get.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I think Leah and I are most excited about the fact that we’ve learned so much over the past five years. The opportunities we have had to help small businesses get off the ground and succeed beyond their wildest dreams — it’s so rewarding. It isn’t easy that’s for sure, we’ve had to fight our way through our fair share of difficulties and just the learning curve that comes from being a business owner and not an employee. It’s different. Relying on open communication, being honest about when we’re in the wrong, and truly finding and defining our target audience have helped us overcome the many challenges involved.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Favorite spots in Dallas – there are SO many! Leah and I love Urban Rio, a Mexican restaurant in Plano. We usually do our “company” celebrations there. There are a number of delicious healthy options here – and the local coffee shops. The Neighborhood Communion Cooperative is a favorite. Since we’re runners, a lot of our favorite spots include trails around the city like White Rock Lake, as well as pretty much any half marathon or 5k race! We’ve run the Showdown Half in Fairview several times, and ask us sometime about our experience running the Austin Marathon back in 2017. If you want team bonding…train for and run a marathon together!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Oh, my success is definitely tied to my business partner. She and I are in this 100% together – and we’re thrilled to be celebrating more than five years in business together. Five years ago I don’t think we expected the success we’ve experienced today. We’re more than business partners – we’re friends, and we each bring such different strengths to the table. I definitely think this is to the benefit of our clients; we have complementary skills and personalities. If you find someone you can work with day in and day out, who shares your value system and is someone you can trust – that’s rare. Hold onto it!
