We had the good fortune of connecting with Jennifer Tran and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jennifer, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
I’ve been working since I was a junior in high school. Starting to work at a young age taught me valuable time management skills. Balancing school, work, and sports was not easy at first. A couple useful ways I started balancing so many things was by giving myself frequent breaks. Using a planner and prioritizing my tasks was also really helpful. I still use these today, in my military career. Rewarding yourself for getting tasks done is a key factor in a good work/life balance.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve always had a very active lifestyle. Being from Huntington Beach, California, most of my time is spent outdoors. This led to an easy adjustment to my new life in the Army. Playing sports growing up has helped me thrive in fast paced environments. Being a female in a male dominated profession, I make it a point to embrace my feminism; while doing the same work that the males do. Though it hasn’t always been easy, I made it to where I am today by taking risks, stepping outside of my comfort zone, and always persevering. I’m proud of who I am, and where I’ve come from.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Since it’s finally football season again (Fly Eagles Fly!) I would take my best friend to a football game; followed by bar hopping in Dallas. Some of my favorite places are Bottled Blonde, The Library, and Tiny Victories. We’d definitely stop by Legacy West for some shopping, and hit up Legacy Hall for some great food afterwards. I love supporting local businesses and trying new places. The trip wouldn’t be complete without a hike at Arbor Hills.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I wouldn’t be where I am today without the support of my parents and brother. They are always behind me, every step of the way. They’re with me to celebrate milestones and successes, but also help me through obstacles.
