We had the good fortune of connecting with Jennifer Alvarado and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jennifer, what is the most important factor behind your success?

I believe my faith is the most important. I think my faith helps me to keep things in a proper prospective and maintain a healthy balance. I also think my faith has fueled my value on integrity and a strong work ethic. I want my word to mean something and so I believe you are supposed to stand for something bigger than yourself. I want my music to be an encouragement, but also help others feel like they have a friend in this world.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?

I am a multi-award winning, international recording artist from Vale, North Carolina. I started in worship ministry and released my first album, Hello Life, back in 2015. It was a Contemporary Christian project with 13 original songs.

In 2020, while I was furloughed from my job, I decided to start releasing my Country Pop material. I released several singles during 2020 and then my first Country EP, “Playing with Fire” in April 2021.

I am currently working on a project titled, “Songbird” that is more Country Pop in style. I am releasing it in two parts. The first part was released in July. The second part will be out in Fall 2022. The project tells the story of a narcissistically toxic situation I went through several years ago.

I was named ”One to Watch” by Nashville Songwriters Association in Spring 2021 and Spring 2022. I was named the “2021 Country Artist of the Year” by Indie Star Radio. My song “Curious” was a Finalist for “Best Pop Song” for the Winter 2022 World Songwriting Awards and won “Best Pop Song” for the Indie Songwriting Awards in Winter 2022.

My latest single “Rock This Way” was just named “Best Pop Song” and “Best Overall Song” by the Indie Songwriting Awards in Spring 2022. I was nominated for five International Singer Songwriter Association Awards, including “Female Vocalist of the Year”, a Josie Award for Female Music Video of the Year for “Filthy Water”, and a Carolina Music Award for Country Female Vocalist of the Year.

I am most proud of my work with the Celebrate Recovery program and I believe the tools and life experience I have learned from that ministry is what helps set me apart. CR has taught me the importance of being authentic and honest and I think that is illustrated in my music. Our testimonies and how we have overcome challenges in our own lives can be the keys that help unlock someone else’s prison.

While not everything is completely autobiographical, I have been very raw with some of my songs and open to the hurts I have experienced in my life. I believe we go through things in order to help give someone else the encouragement they need to survive similarly tough situations.

Music has been anything but a smooth road. I would say my biggest struggle has been myself.

I am a perfectionist and so many times, my own striving or desire to be perfect has actually tripped me up or left me afraid to move. There have also been challenges along the way with egos or toxic people. I had to learn who was speaking the truth and generally cared versus those that may not have my best interest at heart.

For several years, music was a total struggle. I was at a point in early 2021 when I was contemplating throwing in the towel. I told myself to try one more time and if the indie station I was contacting (Indie Star Radio) did not accept my music, then I was putting everything on the shelf.

Instead, I found a group of people that rallied around me and helped rebuild my confidence.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

Texas, and especially Dallas, has no shortage of live music venues. I would definitely want to visit the Granada Theater, because the venue itself is awesome. We can grab a burger at South Side Music Hall. And definitely for the thrifter at heart, drop by Uptown Cheapskate:)

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?

Yes, I would like to dedicate my shoutout to the Celebrate Recovery ministry. I have been a worship leader with the ministry since 2013 and have seen the life-changing benefit of this program. I have seen individuals in the deepest of valleys have their purpose and life restored by the Godly teachings of this ministry. This program is not just for those suffering from substance abuse, but anyone with a hurt, habit or hang-up. So if we are honest with ourselves, we all could benefit from Celebrate Recovery.
