We had the good fortune of connecting with James Deaf Merritt and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi James Deaf, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
Don’t Ever Accept Failure. I love everything about it because represents who I am. These 4 words got me through one of the hardest times in my life which was homelessness. It means more than anyone could ever fathom. Hearing how my affirmation connects with others in life let’s me know that I’m living my purpose.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The more I learn who I am as a person, the more I learn that being myself helps set me apart from others. I’m a licensed Realtor in Texas & Louisiana, Professional Mixshow/Tour DJ, and of course I have my clothing brand with an incredible team behind me. If it wasn’t for growing my network and learning from others that are perform at a high level I wouldn’t have the first clue on how to do business. It’s tough but consistency is the key. When you focus on your passion and stop making everything about money you’ll find that things become easier.

My brand is my purpose. Don’t Ever Accept Failure is the BRAND. Although it started off as a unique acronym for my name “DJ Deaf”, I’ve learned that my brand isn’t just meant for me, it’s meant for all of us. We all fail, we have to accept it, and move on.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I had to pick it would be Deep Ellum. I’m not a big advocate for eating out because I’m a bigger fan for cooking and saving money. However some of my favorite places to go is Will Call. The ownership is top tier.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I am nothing without God. He will always get the first shoutout because I understand that no matter what happens in life, good or bad, he will never let you down. There’s so many people I could list that’s been helpful with my continued growth and success. My parents, best friend Raymond Griffin, and many more. When I need encouragement, I look to those that I can learn from. Everyone can give you advice but not everyone can give you honesty. Those are the people you want to have in your life.
